Stories to inspire your next journey

A creepy, dark forest.

5 of the creepiest landscapes on earth

It takes a certain combination of factors to make a landscape creepy – endless fires, swarming snakes and sinister seas can have the right effect!

In the spirit of Halloween, we’ve tracked down some of the most unusual and unsettling landscapes from across the world. Read on if you dare…

Get spooked

3 curious things for inquisitive travellers

🎃 Darwin’s nerve-racking Halloween
On 31 October 1832, Charles Darwin wasn’t dodging ghosts — he was navigating revolution. According to his diary, HMS Beagle was anchored near Montevideo, refitting and preparing for new surveys along the coast of Patagonia. During this time, Darwin roamed the rocky coasts of Uruguay and Argentina, collecting fossils and perhaps dodging the gunfire exchanged by the local forces in this notoriously unstable region. His was a different kind of fright night.

🌋 A Halloween island emerges
Just before Halloween 1963, the seabed off Iceland began to stir. By mid-November, Surtsey erupted from the deep, giving birth to a brand new island. It’s one of the best-documented cases of a new island forming from volcanic activity – and a reminder that, like some of the souls of those who went before us, the Earth doesn’t rest, least of all on Halloween!

😁 Something encouraging, not frightening!
And finally, here's something that's lifted our spirits, rather than chilled our bones! Earlier this month, a reader of The Times wrote to the Travel Doctor asking for a recommendation for a first-time trip to the Isles of Scilly with a budget of under £2,000 and a focus on history, wildlife, accommodation and good food. What did the doctor prescribe? Our 6-day Isles of Scilly tour, of course!

A word from our guests

"I am delighted to return the form and cannot honestly say enough good things about this wonderfully amazing tour. Ali and Phoebe were the best tour guides I've ever travelled with – they are both gems, and if you wrote to tell me they would be together on another tour, I'd sign up immediately."
