E tipu, e rea..

As we reflect on this year’s Te Matatini Kapa Haka competition, we are heartened by the warm reception by Ngāi Tahu iwi and the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the festival the great success it was. “He Ngākau Aroha” certainly captured the event and was demonstrated throughout.

I runga ano i te ngākau whakaiti ka hoki atu te mihi ki a koutou Ngāi Tahu, ki ngā iwi katoa o Te Waipounamu, Māori mai, Pākehā mai, manene mai, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa.

Te Iti Kahurangi

Te Iti Kahurangi

Te Iti Kahurangi, has made an impact on the Kapa Haka scene, since humble beginnings of 12 performers. They were formed in 2003 and their bold style has enticed, titillated and intrigued avid kapa haka freaks with their composition and powerful vocals. They have certainly pushed the boundaries of performance while treading the fine line of maintaining a solid performance founded in tradition.

The question was raised is Kapa Haka merely entertainment? Or is it a vehicle to challenge the status quo. The obvious answer to both questions is yes, it does, but one can never be sure where controversy will raise its head and none were more surprised than Iti Kahurangi.

Māori TV did not much approve of Iti Kahurangi's haka, but the response to censor was maybe over the top and the reaction by the Kapa Haka public to lobby for its prompt reinstatement within the performance of the online broadcast was testament to the passion people have for this art.

We spoke to Kingi Kiriona their Male leader about his time at Kōhanga and their Matatini 2015 experience.
