Learning to fish
It has been a bad news week for the development sector with reports of yet another respected non profit having to cut services and retrench staff. Causes across the Myggsa giving community are reporting similar difficulties: international donors are withdrawing; the Lottery is just that – a Lottery; and government departments seem unable to get funds to organisations delivering essential services. With news of the Global Fund cancelling Round 11, it is becoming clearer than ever that we can no longer rely on grant aid to come to the rescue. It is time for Africa to learn how to fish.

The rise of the stokvel
A recent study conducted by African Response found that the stokvel market in South Africa is valued at R44 billion, an increase from R33 billion in 2007. This is significantly larger than the country’s agricultural or electricity sectors. The size of the stokvel sector and its popularity across income brackets make it a form of saving that will be around for some time to come. As the year draws to a close, many will be claiming their stokvel savings in the form of bulk groceries and cash. GreaterCapital researcher, Mmamohau Tswaedi, discusses the rise of alternative savings.
