Welcome from the Director!

Welcome to EIU!

We are excited to have you living on campus this fall. Throughout all our on-campus housing there are student staff and professional staff whose priority is YOU. We are dedicated to emphasizing academic achievement while creating a community that fosters a safe and supportive living environment, as well as promoting diversity and leadership opportunities.

We understand the circumstances we are in with the outbreak of COVID-19. We thank you for your patience as the Housing and Dining Services Office worked diligently this summer to make sure we can offer you a safe and enjoyable on-campus experience. We encourage the importance of taking care of each other by following University and CDC guidelines to protect ourselves and others. As you finalize your plans for coming to EIU, please take some time to read through this email to better prepare yourself.

Additionally, we are offering multiple days for move-in. We will be sending you more information in the next coming weeks regarding move-in, so be sure to check your emails regularly.

I look forward to having you on-campus! Feel free to contact Housing and Dining Services if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Mark Hudson, Executive Director
University Housing & Dining Services

Register to Move-In

You will be able to pre-register for a move-in time slot in order to maintain safe physical distancing.

Move-in registration will be available online July 27-30, 2020 and you will select your preferred time slot to move in to your new home on campus. Space during each time slot will be limited and offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Please watch your email for additional information and a link to register for move in!

  • New Incoming Gateway Students and students required to take a Math Placement Test are required to move in on Tuesday, August 18.
  • New Incoming Freshmen and New Transfer Students will move in either on Wednesday, August 19 or Thursday, August 20.
  • Returning Students will be permitted to move back to campus between Friday, August 21 and Sunday, August 23.
  • Early Arrivals: If you are part of an early arrival group, you do NOT need to sign up for a move-in date. Your move-in date/time will be communicated to you by your program director/leader/supervisor/coach/etc.

If you do NOT sign up for a move-in timeslot by July 30, you will be assigned a date and time. All New and Transfer Students (including Gateway and Math Placement) will have their Orientation track tied to their move-in date.

Please be very careful in choosing the best date and time that works for you as it will be very difficult to modify your move-in selection after July 30. However, if you do need to adjust your move-in timeslot, please contact Housing and Dining Services immediately at 217-581-5111.

Things to Do Before Move-In

Start a shopping and packing list.

We want to make sure you have everything you need for a successful year! As you plan, please take a look at our list of things to bring and things not to bring for Move In.

Residence Hall Linens, Bedloft, and TV Services
Outfit your new place from top to bottom at Residence Hall Linens (RHL), the perfect online, one-stop-shop for bedding, bath supplies, decor and countless other accessories.

Finish off your room with products and services such as renting a MicroFridge® (i.e., combination microwave, refrigerator, freezer) from Bedloft. Place your orders before July 29, 2020 to guarantee delivery before move-in day.

Housing offers residents select movie streaming services to all who live on campus. In order to take advantage of the on-campus cable service, you must provide a digital HD TV that supports a QAM tuner and a 10’ coaxial cable. Most devices will include the appropriate tuner, but a quick review of the TV’s specifications in the device’s user’s manual or on the manufacturer’s website is suggested. Visit this link for more information and start streaming when you move in.

Make sure you know how your meal plan works.
Throughout the school year you can use your meal swipes in any of our three Dining Centers (Taylor, Thomas, and Tower). Swipes do not roll over and reset every Monday morning. You can use one swipe every two hours. Dining Dollars can be used in places like the Food Court, Java B&B, and Thomas Marketplace. Check out our menu here.

You can increase your plan at any time during the semester. If you want to decrease your Fall 2020 meal plan, you must submit your change request in writing by August 28, 2020. The request must come from the student and include the desired meal plan and your name. Email requests to housing@eiu.edu.

Learn how to get involved in your new community.
At Housing and Dining, we believe living on campus is about more than where you sleep but it’s also where you learn, grow and make lifelong friends. Hall Council, Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary, and Student Affairs Prep Program are all great opportunities available to on-campus students. We also offer a variety of services and programming such as Living Communities, Faculty Fellows, and the Panther Success Initiative to help our students achieve their academic goals. Research what you feel would be a good fit for you and reach out to your RA during move-in to get involved!

Consider renter insurance or personal property insurance. Contact your insurance provider to see if you're already covered. Eastern Illinois University and University Housing & Dining Services assume no responsibility for theft or damage to personal property, or loss of money, valuables, or personal effects of any student or guest.
