UBCM 2013 Convention

Union of British Columbia Municipalities' 2013 Convention: Navigating the Local Landscape will be in Vancouver from September 16-20, 2013.

This year's Convention Theme Inspired by the UBCM's Recently Launched Newsletter, The Compass

This year the UBCM Convention will run under the theme Navigating the Local Landscape, inspired by The Compass—UBCM’s weekly e-newsletter launched earlier this year.  The 2013 UBCM Convention (September 16-20) will aim to guide local leaders in their efforts to move their communities forward.

The Convention is offering a  full day workshop on “Building and Protecting Sustainable Communities”. This session  will address a number of the most pressing environmental issues facing communities across the province. Topics for discussion will include climate action and green technology. The session will offer regulatory updates, identify gaps, outline tools for local government and highlight best practices.

GCClogo The Carbon Neutral Framework for BC local governments includes 4 steps to carbon neutrality: measure, reduce, offset/balance and report. For 2012, the GCC also supported a ‘making progress toward carbon neutrality’ option under the Framework. Based on an initial review of local government progress toward carbon neutrality for 2012, the GCC has renewed its support for the ‘working towards carbon neutral’ option under the Framework for 2013. See GCC Communiqué here for more details.

Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) reports have been received from 172 local governments. Because this is the third CARIP reporting year a number of trends can be observed. These will be discussed in the CARIP summary report which will be made available online once the final analysis is complete.  A notification will be sent out through the Toolkit when the CARIP summary report is posted to the Ministry of Community, Sport & Cultural Development's website.
