LandSat Data Continuity Mission Launches!

LDCM Launches on February 11, 2013

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, February's full moon is often called the Full Snow Moon since it is often this month when the heaviest snows fall in the northern hemisphere.

We'd like to congratulate the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (Landsat 8) team for the successful launch of LDCM earlier this month. LDCM extends the highly successfuly Landsat series, which  recently celebrated its 40th year of continuous measurement of the Earth's surface. We anxiously await the exciting new imagery it will acquire!

Featured this month in our Environmental Awareness Theme, Into the Mind of Visionary Artist Greg Mort is a fascinating article that probes the perspective and considers the inspiration behind the work of the famed artist. On the topic of Themes, we are pleased to announce our Call for Papers on Wildfires entitled 'Wildfires: From Risk Assessment to Recovery". Its Guest Editors are Earthzine's Senior Advisor, Christoph Aubrecht, Earthzine's Disasters GE,  Sergio Freire and Domingos Xavier Viegas from the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Please don't miss our second article in a series on Earthcube. The article takes a look at EarthCube's cyber-infrastructure that makes large scientific datasets available to scientists in an easy way.

We're always keen to hear from our readers, and in this regard we recently upgraded our commenting system to Livefyre. More articles are listed below; at the end of each you'll find the Livefyre feed. Please give it a try and let us know what you think.

Thanks for your support.

Best Regards,

Daniel McInerney,
Deputy Editor
