Waddle you be doing this Saturday?

Waddle you be doing this Saturday?

It is estimated that the African penguin could be extinct in the wild within 20 years. This scary fact has inspired a group of animal keepers to raise awareness about the plight of this iconic species by waddling for a week from Gansbaai to Simon's Town. Join them on Saturday for the last stretch: a slow waddle of 15km from Muizenberg (Surfer’s Corner) to Simon’s Town (Boulders Beach). Details here.

Two ragged-tooth sharks released back into the wild

Two ragged-tooth sharks released back into the wild

Two ragged-tooth sharks were released back into the ocean recently, as part of our ongoing conservation efforts. The first step was to safely remove Kay, a female raggie, from the I&J Predator Exhibit, and place her in a holding tank, where she was tagged with a tracking device.
Read the two-part tale, and see videos of what it takes to move a shark from an aquarium and into the wild, here and here.

Stranded turtles: what to do

Stranded turtles: what to do

As the winter months approach, the incidence of turtle strandings increases and the Aquarium is on standby to accept these animals and rehabilitate them in preparation for their release back into the ocean. "It is really important that we try to rehabilitate every stranded sea turtle," says aquarist Kevin Spiby. "Each turtle that we can return to health, and the sea, is another individual that can contribute to the survival of the species."
