Dear Subscriber

It was a sad week with the passing of Margaret Olley, a national treasure who certainly lived her art life to the fullest. I was fortunate to have met her briefly, and was inspired by her humour, travel stories, and love of art. If only we could have bottled her spirit and passion!

Art Est. welcomed a group of inspiring women from Sydney Cancer Centre (pictured left) for a day of  'art therapy' to escape into art and take their minds off their illness. And what a ball they had painting and exploring mixed media in a workshop with tutor Margaret Carey.

Art as an escape was a constant theme in our online survey which provided some interesting insights into the reasons why we choose to do art. There is a snapshot of results below.

Art lovers love the arts and we have an exclusive compeitition with Sydney Opera House to win tickets to Spring Dance 2011.

Term 3 is underway and we have some new courses yet to start this week and next and our evening courses are now rolling over more frequently. There are always new weekend workshops for adults, so I hope you will explore the options and find you own art escape.

Kind regards

Jennifer

Why do we do Art?

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to our survey in July's newsletter which asked the question 'Why do we do art?"

Some fascinating results surfaced from the survey that we promised to share...

29% of respondents believe art is their life's passion and are always trying new things

36%  look to art as an ‘alternative therapy’ - to escape and relax

40% consider art is "me time" - a chance to do something for themselves

Over 70% of people enjoy the social aspects of art classes

47% feel less stressed through doing art and 60% percent believe they are a happier person

So if you are stressed, unhappy or need some 'me time', you know where to come to find your art escape!

Vale Margaret Olley - Portrait of an Artist

Margaret Olley, who died at age 88, enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades. The Lismore-born artist became one of Australia's most lauded and loved artists.

A free-spirited and independent woman who never married or had children, Margaret said it was not a role she was cut out for. She once described herself as "a one-woman band, too independent to be subservient to anyone".

Margaret Olley became one of Australia's most prolific artists and also one of the most painted figures in Australian art. William Dobell's portrait of her won the Archibald Prize in 1948, and she said at this year's Archibald lunch that she was happy that Ben Quilty's winning portrait of her "bookended her career".

A generous philanthropist, Margaret Olley's legacy will live on for years to come. Visit the AGNSW for a tribute by Edmond Capon and to see her works in its collection.
