Continuing Professional Development

Coming Soon – TeacherCPD.ie

CPD imageAs the former NCTE has become PDST Technology in Education, the online learning platform used by NCTE to provide online term-time and summer-time courses to teachers is also changing. TeacherCPD.ie is the new name for the online professional development service provided by PDST. It now includes the NCTE learning online service.

Podcasting for Learning will be one of the first courses to be made available on TeacherCPD.ie. The online course Using the Interactive Whiteboard to Support Literacy will be made available this summer via TeacherCPD.ie, pending course approval for EPV days for primary teachers.

Looking ahead to summer courses

CPD imageAlmost 200 instances of four face to face courses will be made available by PDST Technology in Education through the education centre network this summer. These are:

arrowCreating and Using ICT Resources for Literacy
arrowUsing ICT for Literacy and Numeracy in Junior Classes
arrowUsing Scratch to Develop Numeracy (NCTE/Lero)
arrowUsing Tablets and Online Tools for Literacy and Numeracy

Pending course approval for EPV days for primary teachers, details of these courses will be made available soon, together with dates and times, via the course schedule on our website.

Webwise – Safer Internet Day 2013

internet safety imageSafer Internet Day is part of a global drive to promote a safer Internet for all users, especially young people. The 10th Safer Internet Day was celebrated on Tuesday, February 5th, 2013 in many countries across the world, including Ireland. It was another great success! Activites included our own SID Special Newsletter, the launch of www.SaferInternetDay.ie and the campaign, Watch Your Space: It's Up To Us, which targets teen bystanders who witness instances of online bullying.

Webwise - Internet Safety

New Cyberbullying Report Launched to Mark SID2013

webwise imageCyberbullying is having a significant emotional impact on the young people of Ireland, according to the findings of a new report released to mark Safer Internet Day 2013. The study, Cyberbullying among Irish 9-16 year olds, was written by Dublin Institute of Technology researchers and shows that over half of Irish young people who said they were cyberbullied confirmed that the online harassment seriously upset them.

Good Practice : Videos

Cross-curricular learning with Scoilnet Maps and other tools

good practice image In this video, primary teacher, Mark Boggins, from Holy Family National School, Rathcoole, uses Scoilnet Maps and other tools in an SESE lesson. The Scoilnet Maps activity is one of five different station activities, some paper-based, some ICT-based, which all support the development of mapping concepts and geographical investigation skills. The lesson integrates numeracy as well as other curricular areas.

Further roll-out of high speed broadband

technology image All second level schools in Dublin, Meath and Kildare will have high speed (100Mbps) broadband installed during 2013, the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D., and the Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte T.D., announced recently.

This is the second stage of a national roll-out to all second-level schools. The 2012 phase of the project saw broadband installed in all post-primary schools in 14 western and midlands counties, covering 202 schools. This built upon a pilot project involving 78 schools nationally, where the use of broadband has been shown to have improved both teaching and learning.

A Call for Proposals from Presenters is now open. The conference is being preceded by a CESI meet to be held on campus from 7-9pm on Friday 10th May.

EdTech2013 Opening Up Education – Content, Learning and Collaboration

news imageThe Irish Learning Technology Association (ILTA) is holding its 14th annual conference EdTech2013 Opening Up Education – Content, Learning and Collaboration. It will be hosted by University College Cork from May 30-31, 2013. EdTech2013 is presented in conjunction with Ireland’s EU Presidency of the European Council and is themed in line with this recently launched EU DG Education and Culture initiative by Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou.
