Is Spring finally starting to spring? It feels like we have been waiting a long time for the warmer weather and to break out our summer wines. A new bottle on LCBO shelves is Castillo de Almansa Organic Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc, and it has quickly become our go-to as a warm weather white! It’s hard to pick the best part about this wine – the flavour, the price, the fact that it’s organic – so we’ll just pick up a few bottles instead!
Tasting Notes: This blend of Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc delivers lemon/lime citrus notes along with pear, melon and hints of green herbs from that splash of Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hit of pure fruit with an easy-drinking feel and ultra-clean finish.
Enjoy With: Summer salads with citrus vinaigrette, ceviche, shrimp, fish cooked any way (we like it smoked) and grilled chicken dishes. It’s also a great sip while sitting in the sun on warm afternoons.
Style: A fruity, well-balanced, medium-bodied white wine.
Terroir/Region: The Almansa region of Spain is a plain sloping from 900m altitude down toward the ocean. Tradition still guides vineyard work in the region, with producers commonly dry-farming (not watering) their vineyards. Since rain is scarce here, this technique slows the vine’s growth and concentrates flavours in the grapes, creating dense, flavourful wines.
Producer: Grown on a single organic estate, the Castillo de Almansa winemaking team uses a slow, cold fermentation technique to capture all the fresh aromas and flavours released every time you open a bottle of this white wine. They even harvest their grapes overnight to start the process without worrying about the daytime heat of Almansa affecting the wine to come.
