A note from our Director The last two months have been an exciting time for the Latin America CAPE, as more of the projects we have been working on are showing impact. In the education space we showcased some of the amazing students we have sent to Latin America in a workshop at the New Zealand International Education Conference, and explored with partner organisations how we prepare young people to engage with Latin America. In activity for businesses, we launched our expanded Market Insights Programme, hosted great events with speakers attending the Southern Link conference, and saw the appearance of fascinating research on how New Zealand exporters can appeal to Mexican consumers. Connecting both audiences, too, we sent an outstanding intern to Chile to help prepare for the upcoming ABAC summit. A selection of these projects appear in this Update. Over the next quarter our offerings to you will increase even more. Make sure you don’t miss any of our activity! Matthew O'Meagher, Latin America CAPE Director Trade for All: With Minister Parker Our CAPE was the primary sponsor of an address last week from Trade and Export Growth Minister David Parker to the Latin America New Zealand Business Council on the government’s inclusive trade agenda for Latin America. In his address, the Minister outlined the breadth of New Zealand’s relations with Latin America and explained the government’s continued interest in the region. He also presented six pillars of New Zealand’s trade policy: defending the rules-based order; embedding New Zealand in regional economic architecture; supporting regional and global institutions; advancing open plurilateralism; trade for all; and intensified economic diplomacy. Director Matthew O’Meagher introduced the Latin America CAPE’s mission, gave examples of the exciting projects we have been working on, and noted that a number of outputs for business will shortly appear. We congratulate the LANZBC on the success of their gala luncheon! Southern Link Events We have been a key contributor to a number of activities designed to advance the new Southern Link initiative that is positioning New Zealand as a hub between Asia and South America. In late June we funded the participation of Loreto Leyton, the Executive Director of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council (ABAC) 2019, at the Southern Link Conference announcing this initiative in Auckland. We also organised two events in which Loreto introduced Chile’s and ABAC’s goals for the current APEC year to our own stakeholders, as well as a presentation from a delegation from Argentina’s Council for International Relations (CARI). Laura Somerset, Richard Von Appen, Loreto Leyton, Luís Alberto Pino. ABAC intern: Laura Somerset Chile is hosting APEC this year, with New Zealand hosting it in 2021. The Latin America CAPE and The Chile Pacific Foundation (FChP) have been working together on an internship programme for Chile's APEC year. Each year ABAC members give APEC leaders a business view on regional priorities. This year the Foundation is organising ABAC's work programme, and we selected a New Zealand student to intern with them. Laura Somerset was the chosen student, a 20-year-old from Victoria University of Wellington currently in her final year of sociology, environmental studies, and Māori studies. She is helping the Foundation implement its ambitious agenda, which concludes with the ABAC summit in November in Santiago. Market Insights Programme 2019 The cross-CAPEs 2019 Market Insights Programme (MIP) is in full swing, with domestic and international students doing internships in New Zealand businesses that are looking to export their services and products in the Asia-Pacific region. MIP is now running in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington, with a wide variety of businesses such as Comvita, Tuia Group and Pik Pok participating. Globalistas @ NZ International Education Conference: Three of our LatAm CAPE Globalistas featured recently at the New Zealand International Education (NZIEC) Conference in Auckland. Globalistas is our term for people who successfully develop links with Latin America through our mobility programmes. We are continuing to work with them to update their knowledge and skills for their future careers. Tōmairangi McRae (University of Waikato), Fateh Singh (University of Auckland) and Rahiri Makuini Edwards-Hammond (University of Auckland) presented at the NZIEC conference, whose theme was ‘Navigating Our Changing World'.
