Many wines can only be made in one place in the world. This can be because a region has championed the style or grape, or because the conditions that make that style cannot be replicated elsewhere. This week’s wine is Zuccardi Serie A Torrontes from the Salta region of Argentina, and it represents both of these attributes. Torrontes is very, very, rarely grown outside Argentina, and Salta boasts the highest vineyards in the world outside of a few experiments in Nepal. Zuccardi is not conducting experiments here: it has nailed the style and grape, and it’s one you have to experience. So, have you?
Tasting Notes: Rich and intense, Zuccardi Torrontes 2017 bursts out of the glass with ripe citrus and white peach, floral notes, orange peel, jasmine and spices. This is matched on the palate along with refreshing acidity and a long finish to complete the full picture of Argentine Torrontes.
Enjoy With: Hot meat empanadas or ceviche. Its versatility on the dinner table also lets it pair well with the intense flavours of Japanese, Chinese and Thai cuisine.
Style: A dry, medium-bodied, fresh white wine.
Terroir/Region: Torrontes is most at home in the region of Salta, the perfect example of which is Zuccardi’s 2017 Torrontes. Salta is a high elevation region, as in 1800m of high elevation. In Europe, 500m is considered almost too high. ‘Mountain Wines’ like these gain big flavours and aromas by being in more intense sunlight so high up. This is balanced by the freshness gained from being in cooler air way up there, and the results speak for themselves.
Producer: Zuccardi has earned a global reputation for the quality of its wines and it continues to push the boundaries in the country it loves. Zuccardi is one of the wineries which has invested heavily in Argentina, building a state-of-the-art winery and extensively researching the soils and climate of its region. All that knowledge and experience is poured into every bottle, and it’s easy to taste what a difference it makes.
