Alumni spotlight: Marsha Engle '80
The progressive hearing loss Marsha Engle '80 has experienced since childhood has rendered her unable to hear many sounds she used to enjoy. Her realization that images could bring back memories of what she used to hear led her to compile the book "100 Sounds to See."
"At first, the whole idea was supposed to be for me," she told the American Academy of Audiology. "I assembled a list of sounds and my friend … said he would capture the sounds in photographs. As the pictures started to come together, I realized this was a treasure and could serve as a reminder to all of us to listen to the sounds of an ordinary day — the sounds I miss the most."
