Click here Climate action at Cheakamus Community Forest shared with international delegationA Vietnamese delegation of government officials recently toured the Cheakamus Community Forest, seeking to learn more about how Canada is using carbon markets to support improved forest management. Director of Climate Innovation, Joseph Pallant, helped lead the tour to share what Ecotrust Canada has learned about forest carbon offsets through developing this project in partnership with the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations and the Resort Municipality of Whistler. The Cheakamus Community Forest, which spans 33,000 hectares around the village of Whistler, has adopted an Ecosystem-Based Management Plan to preserve the sensitive landscape and wildlife in order to help fight climate change. Joseph considers the project a success for many reasons, including because it is financially sustainable — having sold the majority of its offsets issued to date to clients like the provincial government’s “Carbon Neutral Public Service” program, local governments, businesses and individuals concerned about climate change. Project partners and Ecotrust Canada shared a tangible example of climate action at work with Vietnamese delegates, expanding the conversation on how we can effectively address a changing world while empowering local communities, and keeping forests alive and thriving. Joseph Pallant visually captures the tour in a video New and NotableTRIBUTE: Internationally renowned ecology pioneer and former board member, Crawford Stanley “Buzz” Holling, passed away on August 12, 2019, at age 88.
