Zuccardi Concreto Malbec 2016

With the holidays fast approaching, the LCBO has begun rolling out its holiday music, decorations and wine selections. This year’s wines are an embarrassment of riches (many of them requiring riches to buy), and when you are surrounded by this much good wine, you may end up splurging just a bit. If you find yourself in that situation, check out the Zuccardi Concreto Malbec 2016. This one is worth the extra dough. The Zuccardi family has done incredible amounts of research into its region and winemaking styles, and how the specific flavours created by these two elements can be harnessed into its Malbec. It’s a steal given its price, so splurge away!

Tasting Notes: Produced from 100% Malbec and having been made entirely in concrete (hence ‘Concreto’), Zuccardi Concreto keeps many subtle nuances that may have otherwise been overpowered by oak aging. It shows delicate tannins and herbal nuances but also the intense red and black berry fruit of the Malbec grape. Very terroir-driven, it also shows a stony mineral quality which captures the essence of the land it comes from.

Enjoy With: Braised beef, cheese platters, pastas with rich red sauces, or simply on its own.

Style: A dry, full-bodied, and elegant red wine.

Terroir/Region: Zuccardi Concreto Malbec comes from the high-altitude vineyards of Paraje Altamira in the Mendoza region where the Argentinian heat is cooled by the elevation of the vineyards. Grapes from this region were always renowned for their quality, intensity and freshness, and for producing excellent wines. Zuccardi was one of the first families to begin researching the area and letting the land truly speak for itself in its wines.

Producer: Sebastian Zuccardi, grandson of the founder of Familia Zuccardi, has gone to great lengths to understand the place he calls home and the wines he makes. His technical knowledge is only surpassed by how well he knows the land his vineyards are planted on, having done extensive soil mapping and experimentation. As a result, his wines are focused and precise, easily enjoyed but also studied and coveted. Oh, did I mention he will be visiting Toronto?
