Wine of the Weekend

Moselland Bernkasteler Kurfürstlay Riesling

It’s almost here! March 13 is the day we celebrate Riesling, the grape with an entire book of evidence proclaiming it the “Best White Wine on Earth”.  Admittingly, the guy who wrote that is a fan, but it is hard to argue with a grape that can taste delicious dry or sweet, still or sparkling, cheap or pricy, from just about anywhere in the world vines can be grown. This week’s wine is Moselland Bernkasteler Kurfürstlay Riesling, a perfect example of what this grape can do!

Tasting Notes: 100% Riesling, Moselland Bernkasteler Kurfürstlay shows plenty of juicy green apple, pear and peach, with a lemon/lime flavour like the taste of sherbet. There is a great balance of sweetness and acidity with a mineral note running through each element until the long finish trails off, leading to your next sip.

Enjoy With: Fried fish, roast chicken, or German style sausages and schnitzel, or try with Thai curries or Indian dishes to match up with the heat and big spices.

Style: A medium-bodied, fruity white wine.

Terroir/Region: Germany is the home of the Riesling grape and its largest producer. When it comes to understanding the label, Moselland makes this wine, and ‘Bernkasteler’ refers to the wine being from the village of Bernkastel, on Germany’s Mosel River. ‘Kurfürstlay’ is the name of the vineyard the grapes came from. It’s easy, so now go get some Riesling!

Producer: Moselland began in 1968 when local winegrowers banded together to make their wine. As a co-op, the farmers are also the owners, so each farmer pays close attention to the harvest to draw out the finest flavours from the grapes. Because of this, Moselland sources grapes from all over the top regions of Germany in order to deliver great quality Riesling at an amazing price.

Availability: Moselland Bernkasteler Kurfürstlay Riesling is available in the Germany section of your local LCBO and is $1.00 off until March 27, so hurry up and grab yourself a bottle!
