Health Notes with Dr. LizDr Liz

Better for Breakfast

Mom was right when she told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When it comes to health and performance benefits, eating breakfast works wonders. Here’s a rundown on how eating breakfast every day can help you and your family live healthier.

  • Healthier kids: Studies show that kids who eat breakfast, particularly ready-to-eat cereals, have a healthier body weight than kids who skipped breakfast. Breakfast-eating kids also had a better fiber intake for the day, which in turn may help control appetite later in the day by keeping children feeling fuller. And children who eat breakfast also have better vitamin and mineral intake, especially calcium — good news for bone health.
  • Brighter brain: If clear thinking and better memory are on your daily agenda, then opt for a morning meal. Research studies with both children and adults show that eating breakfast improves short-term memory, reading comprehension and math skills. Since the brain needs fuel for thinking power, going without eating until lunch short-changes your brain, depriving it of needed carbohydrates and other nutrients.
  • Thinner adults: If you think breakfast is for kids, think again. Breakfast-eating adults have been shown to have a lower BMI (Body Mass Index — used as a measure of obesity) and smaller waist circumference. And a smaller waist size can mean a lower risk for diabetes, along with better heart health.

A healthy breakfast should include a quality protein source such as eggs or low-fat milk, yogurt or soymilk, a high-fiber carbohydrate source, such as whole grain bread or cereal and a piece of fruit, such as berries or melon.
