December 2019 UpdateWelcome to SEA CAPE’s December update! 2019 has been a fruitful year for SEA CAPE. We have strengthened our business and education engagement, and created more awareness about Southeast Asia and New Zealand’s potential to engage with the region. Last week, TMIP 2020 participants gathered in Wellington for the programme orientation. With less than a month until departure, we can expect an exciting programme ahead. In this update, you can also read about our work with the University of Otago on developing school students’ intercultural skills, with the University of Waikato on creating an online Asia-Pacific resource hub, and with the University of Auckland on case studies about lessons learned by New Zealand companies in Southeast Asia. I hope you will take a moment to explore the Asia-Pacific website as well as the case studies. Our Market Readiness Programme has had a successful 2019. Special thanks go to our key partner, Export NZ, and guest speakers who came together to help build the capabilities of New Zealand businesses to engage with Southeast Asia. We look forward to offering the programme across more regions in 2020. Please get in touch with me if you have a need for a workshop about a particular industry or region. Our thanks also go to the various NZ Inc. agencies, institutions and individuals who have joined forces with us on various activities to strengthen our programmes. On behalf of SEA CAPE, I thank you for your fantastic support. Finally, I wish all of you a pleasant festive season and look forward to your continued support in the New Year! - Siah Hwee Ang, Southeast Asia CAPE Director TMIP 2020 students meet SEA CAPE and stakeholders at orientationThe Tertiary Market Immersion Programme (TMIP) orientation session took place last Friday. Selected students had the chance to mix and mingle with their academic mentors and some of SEA CAPE's key stakeholders. Attendees also heard about the resonating benefits of the programme firsthand from two participants of TMIP 2019. In just three weeks' time, this business savvy group of NZ students will travel to Southeast Asia with their academic mentors and immerse themselves in the business scenes of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and report on their findings. Keep an eye on SEA CAPE socials for on-the-ground updates! International tertiary students help schools develop intercultural skillsSEA CAPE consortium partner The University of Otago has developed and delivered a series of interactive workshops for primary and intermediate schools. These workshops, facilitated by tertiary-level international students, were designed to encourage students to learn more about the languages and cultures of Southeast Asia. Teaching for the Asia-Pacific The University of Waikato, supported by the Centres of Asia-Pacific Excellence, has created a one-stop-shop website for teachers wanting to integrate the Asia-Pacific into their teaching and learning programmes. Designed with the busy reality of teachers' working lives in mind, the Teaching for the Asia-Pacific website contains a resource database from a whole host of sources in one place. It also boasts an impressive self-review tool where teachers can complete quick questionnaires to learn about their own global competence, and view relevant resources to support their teaching. Market Readiness Programme (MRP)What a year it has been for the SEA CAPE Market Readiness Programme (MRP). We have hosted specialised workshops across the country with over 100 businesses attending in 2019! That's 100 NZ business who are now better prepared to assess potential Southeast Asian markets. Our suite of three specialised Market Readiness workshops allows attending businesses to absorb the knowledge of expert academics while also networking and sharing experiences with other businesses working in or planning to work in the region. We look forward to bringing more workshops to even more regions and businesses in 2020. Lessons from New Zealand companies in Southeast AsiaSEA CAPE has been working with the New Zealand Asia Institute at the University of Auckland to develop a series of case studies, which analyse the real world challenges and dilemmas facing New Zealand firms looking to grow their revenues in Southeast Asia. The case studies offer lessons, based on the experience of real New Zealand businesses and the characteristics of New Zealand products, for identifying and growing opportunities in these markets.
