Tickets to new Shanghai service on sale

Seats on the new direct trial flights between Perth and Shanghai are now on sale with economy airfares on offer from $698 return including tax. The service will start on January 15, 2020 and run until February 17, 2020, offering three flights a week for five weeks. The direct flights will depart Perth on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the trial period. The China Eastern Airlines trial flights are a partnership between Tourism WA; Perth Airport; Tourism Australia and the airline. Tourism WA is investing an additional $1 million into marketing campaigns to promote Western Australia as a desirable holiday destination in China as well as generate ticket sales. The seasonal trial flights coincide with Chinese New Year and mark the first time China Eastern has flown direct to Perth. MasterChef Australia episodes starring WA air in NZ

Kiwis could soon be planning their own gourmet escape to Western Australia when the first of five Perth and Margaret River episodes of MasterChef Australia go to air this Saturday November 9. Tourism WA supported the filming earlier in the year, which highlights key foodie experiences from the Swan Valley to Perth city, Rottnest Island and the South West. Tourism WA is enticing viewers to travel to our State with a Facebook advertising campaign, in partnership with Flight Centre NZ. An audience of more than half a million New Zealanders have been tuning into each MasterChef Australia episode.

 

Cruise offers rare opportunity to get up close to Pink Lake

Visitors hoping to snap a selfie in front of the striking pink lake (Lake Hillier) near Esperance will be able to take a closer look with a one-off cruise on offer. Running on January 11, 2020, the trip to Middle Island will take about two hours and provide a different way to get a glimpse of not only the natural phenomenon but also wildlife such as dolphins as well as the area’s scenery. Spotlight on WA in Tourism WA Penang Roadshow 2019

Western Australia was a hot topic at the Tourism WA Penang Roadshow 2018 held at G Hotel Penang in late September.
The event kicked off with an appreciation dinner that was attended by 21 North Malaysian agents and offered a chance to connect the trade key decision makers with WA operators.The roadshow included a WA destination update session with 63 agents taking the opportunity through interesting games and presentations to learn more about the state and the latest offerings.

 

Opportunity for Fremantle businesses

Businesses based in the City of Fremantle can promote their offers as part of a brochure being developed for cruise ship crew members. The City of Fremantle is developing the brochure to distribute to crew featuring special offers and discounts to encourage them to get off the ship to shop and stock up in Fremantle.If you would like to take part, email City of Fremantle economic development officer Caroline Baird, at business@fremantle.wa.gov.au and include details of your special promotion or offer for the crew.

 

New Zealand visitors urged to take WA Road Trip

Western Australia’s status as the “Road Trip State” was clear for kiwis to see during a recent campaign with Helloworld NZ. The Road Trips campaign highlighted iconic self-drive itineraries across the state, including the Coral Coast Highway, Great South West Edge and Gibb River Road. Unique foodie, nature and aquatic experiences were showcased in suggested road trip holiday options departing from Perth, Broome or Kununurra. The campaign included television, digital, social, electronic newsletter and in-store advertising.

 

Perth and Margaret River in US media

The Western Australia Gourmet Escape has been included in an article of Five Amazing Food Festivals from Around the World, syndicated across Food & Wine, Travel + Leisure and Yahoo! Lifestyle with a total unique monthly audience of 21.4 million. Margaret River also featured in an AFAR article showcasing Australia’s best small wine towns. AFAR has an audience of almost 900,000. Finally, Perth was listed as one of the best warm-weather destinations to visit this December in an article syndicated across MSN, PureWow and Yahoo! Lifestyle with a total unique monthly audience of 22.7million. The article noted Kings Park, Cottesloe Beach and the city’s cultural attractions and waterfront dining. 

 

2020 Western Australian Heritage Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2020 Western Australian Heritage Awards. The awards celebrate those working to promote heritage tourism and interpretation. Nominations in the heritage tourism category may be a walking tour, historic trail, festival, event, bed and breakfast, hotel, accommodation, cruise or performance. Visit the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage’s website to find out more, including information on the award categories and criteria as well as how to submit a nomination. Nominations close on Friday December 13, 2019.

 

Call for Abstracts for the World Indigenous Tourism Summit

The third World Indigenous Tourism Summit is being held in Perth in April 2020 and a call for abstracts is now open until December 13.  Organised by the Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC), and hosted by Tourism WA, the summit is expected to attract hundreds of delegates from around Australia and the world. The summit theme is “Tourism and Indigenous Earth Wisdom – Weaving the Future that Benefits All”. The theme will focus on key areas of Aboriginal tourism, including Youth, Environment, Culture, Aboriginal led research, Government best practice and the Business of Tourism. Passenger shuttle bus for Freo

Fremantle Ports is providing a free shuttle bus to and from the Fremantle Train Station which is the first that will be provided for all ‘turnaround’ cruise ships - those ships visiting Fremantle for a complete passenger exchange. The 34-seater bus will travel in a 20-minute continuous circuit from the Passenger Terminal to the train station and back from one hour after the ship has berthed until 4pm. Disembarking passengers can get on the bus at the Passenger Terminal and embarking passengers can board at the train station (the stop is at the tram stop next to the CAT bus stop).

 

Tourism operator scam alert

There are recent reports of a scam targeting tourism operators in Western Australia. Emails asking operators to click or phone to confirm bookings are being sent out and this leads to a website requesting payment. These emails are designed to appear as if they are from Tourism WA or another State Tourism Organisation. If you have received an email of this type then it can just be deleted. As a reminder, Tourism WA does not charge operators to be listed on its website.

 

Change of date – WA Japan Roadshow

WA Japan Roadshow, which will now take place in Japan between February 24 and 29, 2020, is a premier trade event for WA tourism products and services to engage with key Japanese travel companies. There will be a range of events throughout the week, providing an opportunity to network and engage with wholesale planners, salespeople, major agencies, local travel agencies, MICE sales, online travel agencies and land operators in Tokyo and Osaka. Registrations will open late in November. In the meantime, please email your Expression of Interest by November 15, 2019.

 

Regional event holders encouraged to apply for funding

Upcoming regional events could be eligible for a funding boost as part of Tourism WA's annual Regional Events Scheme. Event holders have until mid-December to submit their application for the 2020-21 funding round, which supports smaller and emerging regional events across the State. A total funding pool of $1 million is available, including a separate pool of $150,000 allocated to the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme (RAES). To be eligible for either scheme, events must be held between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 with event holders able to make a funding submission for between $5,000 and $40,000. Applications open for Project Manager role

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is recruiting for a Project Manager – Capital Works. The full-time role is based in Collie, with the successful applicant to be directly involved with the Collie Adventure Trails initiative. Application close at midday on Wednesday November 13, 2019. Workshops to welcome industry on board

November 12, 13 and 22: The Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association will be running a number of workshops in partnership with Australia’s South West in November to support industry in understanding some of the opportunities available as part of the direct flights between Melbourne and Busselton which start next March. 2019 AHA Hospitality Awards for Excellence

November 11: The 2019 AHA & Aon WA Hospitality Awards for Excellence will be presented at the Byron Bay Lager Gala Ball at Crown Perth. Celebrating the best of WA's hospitality industry, these awards are an opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and success of hospitality businesses as well as individuals whose commitment and dedication elevates the quality of the sector across the state. The World Gourmet Symposium

November 14: The World Gourmet Symposium is part of WA Gourmet Escape, sponsored by Tourism WA and is an opportunity for anyone in the business of food to learn how to scale their brand, business and bottom line, and hear from some of the biggest names in food, hospitality, technology and leadership. Participants can also join in a discussion to shape the future of eating, dining and hospitality. The event will be held at Mandoon Estate from 9am to 5pm, with registration from 8am. Learn to be a tour guide with Global Gypsies

November 19: Global Gypsies is running a one-day Tour Guide Training Course in conjunction with Tourism Council WA. Designed for working or aspiring guides, or for entrepreneurs keen to start their own tourism businesses, the course combines presentations, anecdotes, group discussions and a creative workshop. Topics will include interpretive presentation, duty of care, risk management, dealing with emergencies, leadership, cultural awareness, environmental responsibility, conflict resolution, customer service, starting your own tourism business, job opportunities and more. Perth and Regional WA Japan Ready Workshops

November/December: Due to overwhelming demand, Tourism Council WA has scheduled Japan Ready Workshops in Geraldton on November 20, Australia’s South West on November 27 and Perth on December 4 to assist WA tourism businesses become ready to service the growing Japanese market. This comprehensive workshop will cover an overview of the Japanese market, Japanese service and cultural awareness, translation requirements, food service requirements, welcoming Japanese groups including students and MICE, key commercial considerations and engagement through sales and marketing. New Holiday in WA Campaign

Tourism Council WA will be launching a marketing campaign in November to promote Quality Tourism Accredited Businesses. The campaign, Holiday in WA, will prompt consumers to look for the Quality Tourism Accredited Business logo when planning their holidays, and to book directly with your business. A new Holiday in WA consumer website is being developed, where eligible Quality Tourism Accredited Businesses will be listed.
