Treasurer hands down State Budget for 2019-20

The Treasurer, Hon. Ben Wyatt MLA, has handed down the 2019-20 Western Australian State Budget today. Tourism WA’s overall expenditure budget for 2019-20 is $101.959 million. Included in the 2019-20 Budget is an additional $10 million over five years, to help attract new routes to Western Australia and grow the State’s reputation as Australia’s western gateway. The State Government has also committed to a $12 million international marketing boost, including $9 million in new funding. The additional funding is expected to attract more international visitors to Western Australia and provide a substantial jobs boost for the State. Tourism Western Australia is in the earlier stages of resetting the way it markets the State as a tourism destination. It will also begin work on a long-term tourism strategy for Western Australia, which will align with the national strategy being developed by Tourism Australia. Aboriginal tourism will be an important focus for the State Government, with a whole-of-Government strategy being developed in 2019-20. The Budget papers are available from the State Budget website.

Perth to host its first day-night Test match

Western Australian cricket fans will get to experience the spectacle of a night Test when Australia plays trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand on December 12. Tourism Minister Paul Papalia and Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray welcomed Cricket Australia's international summer schedule announcement, which will bring some major clashes to Perth. As a part of the fixtures, Perth will also host its first Twenty 20 International in nearly a decade, with world number one-ranked Pakistan taking on Australia on November 8. It comes as the State Government, through Tourism Western Australia, successfully bid to host the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup in 2020. Eleven men's and women's matches will be played in Perth next year, which is expected to attract a huge number of visitors - creating jobs and boosting the economy. For more information, read the Tourism Minister and Sport and Recreation Minister’s joint media statement.

State Budget helps put Perth on map for international students

The State Government will invest an extra $4.5 million towards StudyPerth's International Education Action Plan, as part of the 2019-20 State Budget, which was handed down today. The plan will boost WA’s economy and provide substantial benefits to WA’s education sector and tourism industry. In 2018, WA received 44,400 international students and about one in five of them received a minimum of one visit from family or friends (from overseas). Implementation of the International Education Action Plan aims to attract an additional 16,000 students, bringing the total international student enrolments in Perth to an estimated 88,000 by 2022, which could bring as much as $2.5 billion in State annual income and generate about 15,500 jobs in WA’s international education sector. This funding boost is in addition to the State Government's investment of $2 million towards the five-year plan, aimed at growing its share of the international education market. For more information, read the Premier and Education Minister’s joint media statement.
