Contracts of Employment

Primarily, medical practitioners covered by the WA Health System – Medical Practitioners – AMA Industrial Agreement 2016 (“the Agreement”), are employed on a fixed term basis. The Agreement’s Appointment Term Provisions* provide for appointments of:

• Five years for Senior Doctors, unless there is contrary written agreement;
• Three years for Interns, which takes them up to RMO Yr 3;
• 12 months for other Doctors in Training (“normally”), with the possibility of appointments for the nominal length of accredited training.

The AMA has long advocated for the Appointment Term Provisions to be reconsidered in light of a vastly different environment to the one where the above terms of appointment were established.

AMA (WA)'s Dr YES joins ABC Perth to discuss the issue of 'sexting'

Medical Director of AMA (WA)'s Dr YES program, Associate Professor Rosanna Capolingua, and program coordinator, Julian Ming, joined ABC Perth recently to discuss the need for sex education to evolve to keep pace with trends like sexting.

Research published this year suggests one in seven teenagers have sent explicit texts and one in four have received them. This prompted a change to the Dr YES program which now includes more up-to-date information about sexting and health.

Dr Omar Khorshid discusses WA's first medicinal cannabis clinic with ABC Perth

WA's first medicinal cannabis clinic has opened up in Subiaco. Dr Omar Khorshid joined Geoff Hutchison on ABC Perth recently to discuss the opening. Dr Khorshid told ABC that nothing has changed in WA's stance on cannabis, nor has anything changed in the evidence behind medicinal cannabis.

Listen to the full segment on ABC Radio website. (Please note, Dr Khorshid begins his segment at approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes in).

Minute Clinic WA

AMA (WA) has been made aware that Terry White Chemmart at Westfield Innaloo are offering “convenient medical consultations” at Minute Clinic WA, via promotions on their Facebook page and website. The advertised “medical appointments” are provided by Nurse Practitioners, not by a medical practitioner as would be reasonable expected. The AMA (WA) has submitted a statutory offence claim to AHPRA given the use of the protected title “medical”, as well as to the ACCC for the misleading advertising.
