Wine of the Weekend

Warre’s Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Port

Hosting duties can be complicated during the holidays: cleaning the house for guests, preparing lots of food, accommodating large numbers, then trying to have a few people around to help clean up after the fun. Just stocking up can be the most complicated part – there are often calls for less common but heartily enjoyed beverages, and Port often pops up on that list. You know that after the turkey, Uncle Al always asks for Port to go with the fruitcake and gingerbread, so do your host (or yourself) a favour and grab a bottle of Warre’s Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Port for after dinner. You may even find yourself enjoying a glass after the work is done for the day!

Tasting Notes: Warre’s Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Port is a rich tawny colour, sporting aromas of dried fruit, nuts and baking spices (sound like fruitcake?). On the palate, it is rounded and not overly sweet, creating an intense and balanced sip packed with fruit, leather flavours and oak spices, soft tannins and a long finish.

Enjoy With: All of your favourite holiday desserts – pumpkin pie, gingerbread, fruitcake, and all things chocolate, as well as sharp cheeses or on its own as an after-dinner digestif.

Style: A sweet, full-bodied, fruity red Port wine.

Terroir/Region: Warre’s Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Port is made from a blend of grapes including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão, many of which are specific to the Port industry. Portugal’s Douro Valley is the home of Port wine, with the nearby city of Oporto acting as the region’s trade hub and (nautical) port. So, in pouring a glass, you would be drinking a Port wine, shipped from the port of Oporto, Portugal. As you may notice, this wine has had a bit of influence on the area over the years.

Producer: Warre’s was founded in 1670 under the name Burgoyne and Jackson, evolving through partnerships and marriages until William Warre joined the company. By the end of the 1700s, Warre and Sons was doing 10% of the total volume of the Port business globally. A second William Warre was a major military figure in his age and produced the Warre’s Warrior Port, the first and oldest Port brand in the world! Warre’s Port wines are truly history in a bottle.
