50 Years of Opening Doors for Alaskans
By Bryan Butcher, CEO/ Executive Director
Alaska has a history of a “can do” spirit. From Alaska’s indigenous people who have been the caretakers of the land for centuries, to the pioneers who saw the potential of the last frontier and made statehood a reality, our history is peppered with doers, thinkers, and innovators.
As we reflect on 50 years of serving Alaskans, we celebrate not only a land of opportunity but a land where people make the difference — where people come first.
While opportunity remains the shining light of this great state, our history has had its challenges;
none perhaps more dire than those presented by COVID-19. Despite the circumstances, we did what we have always done — rolled up our sleeves and got to work, demonstrating leadership, integrity, and respect.
The most recent example is when Congress made COVID-19 emergency rent relief available, the Alaska Legislature and Governor Dunleavy directed millions our way to help financially distressed renters. To date, we’ve distributed over $100 million in assistance quickly and efficiently.
This success is a direct result of the dedication of our employees, non-profit community partners, and state and local officials — all demonstrating that “can do” spirit to help fellow Alaskans.
Our work over the last 50 years prepared us to meet today's challenges and tomorrow's. To recognize those who came before us and to tell that story, we have created an interactive timeline with important dates in our history — and Alaska’s history. Travel through time with us.
We also invite you to safely visit with us at the State Fair in Palmer Aug. 20 - Sept. 6. It’s a great time to reconnect with friends and family, and to share 50 years of opening doors for Alaskans.
