The 2017 ICP Infinity Award Films By MediaStorm

MediaStorm is thrilled to present, for the fifth year in a row, our partnership with the International Center of Photography and Harbers Studios. This year, MediaStorm was proud to produce the films honoring these winners: Michael Christopher Brown, Libyan Sugar, for Artist’s Book; Michael Famighetti and Sarah Lewis, Vision & Justice, for Critical Writing and Research; Edmund Clark and Crofton Black, Negative Publicity, for Documentary and Photojournalism; Vasantha Yogananthan, for Emerging Photographer; and For Freedoms, for Online Media and New Platform.

Each year, the ICP recognizes these outstanding artists at a gala in Chelsea Piers, which serves the dual purpose of honoring these works and garnering support for the ICP. According to ICP Executive Director Mark Lubell, the Awards ”acknowledge the significant talents of those using photography and visual arts to shed light on and make an impact on an ever-changing world."

MediaStorm’s films have been highlighted as the signature moment of the event. Since the first presentation of the films at the 2013 gala, ICP has sky rocketed its fundraising goals and achievements. In 2016, it raised $1.2 million in one night, and MediaStorm is humbled to have played a role in catalyzing that effort. Our work with ICP affirms that storytelling moves people to action.

For MediaStorm, creating these films pays homage to our roots in photography and our aspiration for the field, that it continue being a force for change. Echoing the words of this year’s winner for Critical Writing and Research, Sarah Lewis, pictures and progress and inextricably linked. No one understands that better than this year’s recipients of the Infinity Awards. Congratulations to all the winners, including Harry Benson, for Lifetime Achievement, and Sophie Calle, for Art.

Artist's Book: Michael Christopher Brown

After spending a year on a failed photographic project in China, Michael Christopher Brown needed a change. A year later, he was recovering from a near fatal injury, and the wounds of a loss that shook the photography community to its core.

Critical Writing and Research: Michael Famighetti, Editor; Sarah Lewis, Guest Editor

Vision & Justice explores how photography has been weaponized to both denigrate and celebrate African American life. This publication honors the works of African American artists who seek to reframe the visual narrative.

Emerging Photographer: Vasantha Yogananthan

In his retelling of the Indian epic the Ramayana, Vasantha Yogananthan explores the space between truth and fiction, merging documentary and fine art photography to create a story about how the myth impacts Indian society today.

Documentary & Photojournalism: Edmund Clark and Crofton Black for Negative Publicity

By following the seemingly mundane bureaucratic paper trail of the War on Terror, Photographer Edmund Clark and investigator Crofton Black uncover secrets the government would rather keep hidden.

Online Platform & New Media: For Freedoms - Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman

For Freedoms is the first artist-run Super PAC. The PAC was founded by photographers and artists to engage in the political process and offer more complex messages.
