Marketing Mistakes

—The mistake: Not making use of page titles and page descriptions to enhance your SEO.

Admit it. You eat more than three meals a day. In fact, you're probably eating right now! Oh wait … SEO has nothing to do with eating but instead it has everything to do with how well your website attracts customers.

What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is part science and part art. It's the strategy and techniques employed to make your website appear higher in the search results by sites like Google.

The basics of SEO are obvious. If you want your unusual Cheetos® collection to show up on Google searches, then you need to have a webpage about your collection. It should be full of images and words that Google can read about your hobby. Just doing that gets you most of the way there, but getting to the top of the search results will take some work.

Accurate and concise page titles
Page titles give Google important clues to what your page is about. Keep your title under 70 characters. It should include one to three words about the subject of the page, with your company name and location last. And each page should have a different title that connects to the subject of that page. For your Cheetos collection webpage, a good title would be:

Outrageously Shaped Snacks | Unusual Cheetos Gallery | Cheddar, Wisconsin

Page descriptions are an SEO asset
The page description is the brief paragraph that shows up when your online search turns up a list of pages.

Keep your keywords in mind when you write. But more importantly, your page description is a vital brand optimization tool. This 155-character paragraph needs to define your brand message and set you apart from the other options Google presents. What you write must perfectly describe the content on the page and establish your brand message in the mind of the visitor. For your Cheetos collection webpage, a good description would be:

Shop online in my cheesy gallery of unusual Cheetos! It's the world's most unique collection of delicious crunchy snack food. Be amazed and entertained.

Good page titles and accurate page descriptions are like a handful of Cheetos in the middle of the afternoon. They're easy to overlook later when your wife asks you if you've eaten already.
