Wine of the Weekend

Domaine Hatzimichalis Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

With Taste of the Danforth kicking off this weekend, everyone in Ontario is going Greek. The annual festival will pack Danforth Avenue with food, drink, music and events to keep a Gyro in your hand and smashed plates under your feet all weekend long. If you’re staying closer to home, this is the weekend to pull out your skewers and grill up some souvlaki! Of course, you will need a little ‘krasi’ (wine) to go with it, and Domaine Hatzimichalis Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 will show you one of the world’s favourite grapes translated into Greek.

Tasting Notes: A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from estate-owned vineyards, Domaine Hatzimichalis Cabernet Sauvignon shows concentrated aromas of black currants and blackberries, along with oaky nuances of sweet spices. It’s an intense, well-structured Cabernet Sauvignon with bold tannins, concentrated flavours and a persistent finish.

Enjoy With: Lamb dishes (of course), spare ribs, grilled steak, game meats and intense hard cheeses.

Style: A dry, full-bodied, structured red wine.

Terroir/Region: The Atalanti Valley is not a wine region you have likely heard of before, but you’ll definitely remember it after tasting Hatzimichalis Cabernet Sauvignon. The valley runs east to west and is set between two mountain ranges, allowing sunlight to hit the vines all day long. With the surrounding mountains helping to channel and funnel cool air through the valley, the region is able to produce balanced, evenly ripened grapes and well-structured wines.

Producer: OK, what’s with the turkey on the label? The turkey stands as a tribute to the turkey farming business Dimitris Hatzimichalis (the winery’s founder and owner) ran on the original property to support the winery as it began in the 1970s. With many of his birds landing on Canadian dinner tables, you may have had one of Dimitris’ turkeys for Thanksgiving! You should probably taste his wine too.
