Isla Mujeres is fast becoming a year-round destination, with summer season occupancy at the highest levels ever. (Photo of your friendly innkeeper by artist Rick Garcia)
But the in-between months of May and September are my favorites. An experience of what the island was like when I first arrived 25 years ago, with almost empty beaches by day and quiet streets at night.
Mexican Independence day is celebrated on September 15, and is hands-down the best party of the year with food and fireworks and music lasting 'till dawn... Viva Mexico! Reservations now available for 2015.
There is a buzz of activity as the island prepares for the arrival of winter season visitors. The new ferry terminal is complete, the square and main streets have been beautifully planted, the downtown church completely renovated, and several new restaurants are getting ready to open. Lolo Lorena has a new menu influenced by her summer journey to Morocco. Barlitos has a wonderful new location in Marina Paradiso. And the Soggy Peso will be open once again for ribs on Sunday. A full report will be coming in next month's newsletter!
