It lifts us up and unites us, but for many in the music sector the COVID-19 restrictions halted performances, impacting the income of artists and organisations. The New Zealand Music Commission and NZ On Air are managing a range of funds designed to support the industry’s recovery. This newsletter focuses on music – funding just opened, recent allocation announcements and funding available to support new music. There is more information on music funding on our website. Aotearoa Music Touring Programme open for applicationsApplications are now open for New Zealand artists wanting financial support to perform live original music on tour in Aotearoa. The programme provides $5 million of funding over two years. Delivered by the New Zealand Music Commission, this funding aims to reinvigorate New Zealand’s live music sector and the industry behind it. People working in the live performance industry have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings. And it’s made planning future events difficult. This fund provides more certainty and supports economic recovery. It will benefit not only musicians and music businesses, but also those working behind the scenes to bring tours to life and New Zealanders that enjoy the experience of live, local music. New Zealand artists thinking about getting on the road to perform original live music should consider applying. The first round of applications closes on Tuesday 27 October 2020. To apply and for more information visit the New Zealand Music Commission. NZ Music Venue Infrastructure Fund is paying outThe third round of grants have been announced for the $3 million NZ Music Venue Infrastructure Fund to upgrade music venues across Aotearoa. Applications for this fund have now closed. As at 24 September, $2.6 million has been allocated, in grants of up to $50,000 per venue. The fund has so far supported 77 venues across 26 towns and cities across New Zealand. The remaining successful applicants will be announced over the next few weeks. This funding goes towards upgrading music venues to provide a COVID-19 safe environment for audiences, workers and artists. A list of venues that received support are on the NZ Music Commission website – Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3. NZ On Air’s New Music programmesThinking about creating new music? Regeneration Fund engagement now closedThank you to everyone who shared their feedback on the draft approach for the Cultural Sector Regeneration Fund during our recent engagement. The online survey closed on 22 September and we received over 200 responses. Manatū Taonga also hosted 14 online focus groups and hui with representatives from the cultural and other related sectors around Aotearoa. These were useful and rich discussions. All the feedback is now being collated and analysed and will help inform our advice to Ministers on the final design for the fund. We will be sharing a summary of the feedback through this newsletter in the coming weeks. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts.
