Click here ![]() August 2021A Message from the NSW Chief Animal Welfare OfficerNSW Animal Welfare Reform – Discussion Paper The NSW Government is modernising and streamlining our animal welfare laws and we’re inviting you to have your say. Community expectations and animal welfare science have changed significantly in the 40 years since our existing legislation was written. That is why we’re replacing three pieces of outdated legislation with one modern Act that will be easier to understand and follow. More than 1,100 stakeholders had their say in the first round of consultation and that feedback has been used to develop the proposals outlined in the Animal Welfare Reform - Discussion Paper. Caring for animals during COVID-19 Animal owners have a legal responsibility under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 to ensure the welfare of their livestock and companion animals, which allow you to travel during restrictions for the welfare of your animals following strict hygiene and social distancing requirements. NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) will also continue to support our industry and businesses to navigate the challenges and impacts of COVID-19.
