AMA (WA) elects new President

The Australian Medical Association (WA) last week elected Dr Andrew Miller as President.

Dr Miller served as AMA (WA) President in 2016-2017 but did not seek re-election at the end of his first year due to family illness.

Dr Miller said he was proud to have been elected to head the AMA (WA) in the first contested presidential election in 15 years.

Dr Miller, a University of Western Australia graduate is a specialist anaesthetist and company director.

Government survey raises concerns about senior health management

The State Government’s very first staff engagement survey for public health workers has shown a worrying lack of faith in senior management, the Australian Medical Association (WA) said today.

"Just 42 per cent of medical professionals agreed it was safe to speak up and challenge the way things were done in their organisation. This indicates that 58 per cent of doctors feel fearful to voice their opinion – and that’s just not good enough,” AMA (WA) President Dr Andrew Miller said.

Clinical engagement and morale are recognised as crucial determinants to patient outcomes.

Reminder to complete the Senior Doctors Morale and Clinical Engagement Survey

The AMA (WA) is conducting a Morale and Clinical Engagement Survey for senior doctor members who are employed by or provide services at WA public hospitals and health services. Senior doctors have been emailed inviting them to complete the confidential survey. The AMA (WA) strongly encourages senior doctors to complete the survey.

The 2019 Survey is being conducted following reports across WA of deteriorating morale and poor engagement. It is important that senior doctors, with positive and negative experiences, complete the survey.

A reminder email to those who are yet to complete the survey was sent yesterday. Please check your inbox or junk mail folder. Alternatively, you can email david.copland@amawa.com.au to request a survey link.

Community Pharmacy Ownership Review

The Review of Community Pharmacy Ownership in WA, which was quietly published online by the Health Department in the last few weeks, calls for the Government to seek advice about which additional services it should fund pharmacists to provide. Newly elected AMA (WA) President Dr Andrew Miller has described the report as a "wish list for pharmacists who want to be doctors".

Dr Miller joined Gary Adshead on 6PR recently to discuss the issue. Listen to the segment online

Goodbye DWS, Hello DPA

AMA Recruit has had a busy time with the July 1 changeover from DoctorConnects' old district of workforce shortage (DWS) geographic classification into the new distribution priority area (DPA) system. Some doctors limited by the 19AB Medicare restrictions now have to take the new boundaries into account in their career planning. Likewise, practices need to be aware of the implications for their own future workforce planning in the coming months and years.

DoctorConnect has a new map and factsheet and for some context, there is some useful background regarding the Stronger Rural Health Strategy.

As always, the friendly team at AMA Recruit are available to consult and give you advice on these topics.
