Wine of the Weekend

Terra d’Aligi Tatone Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2016

You may not realize it, but there are wine tastings happening right now! The global wine industry has gone virtual, with seminars occurring through video chats and lots of mini wine bottles being shipped to wine professionals for tasting. To get an idea of what the wine biz is up to, grab a bottle of this week’s wine, Terre d’Aligi Tatone Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2016, and head to the winery’s website. You can see the vistas of Abruzzo, learn about the soils and how they affect the wines, or even plan a trip to see it for yourself!

Tasting Notes: After 24 months in large oak barrels, then further time in bottle, Terra d’Aligi Tatone has evolved into a well-integrated wine showing black currant and red berry fruit, violet notes and sweet baking spices, all with a fresh, balanced acidity.

Enjoy With: Hard cheeses, pasta, and grilled meats are best - think pork tenderloin or burgers. Terra d’Aligi Tatone is also a great sip on its own, especially after a minute in the fridge to bring it just below room temperature.

Style: A dry, medium-bodied fruity red wine.

Terroir / Region:  The Italian region of Abruzzo is marked by the Apennine Mountains and the centuries-old bridleways of the region’s shepherds. These paths wind down from the mountains and around the vineyards on their slopes, where the grapes of Terre d’Aligi ripen.

Producer:  The Spinelli family is described as authentic Abruzzi: feet on the land and looking to the future. “Feet on the land” expresses their deep knowledge of the land they are from and what it can produce. By looking ahead, they have brought the wines of their family and region to the world and are building a passionate following of wine lovers wherever they go.

Availability: The 2016 Terra d’Aligi Tatone Montepulciano d’Abruzzo can be found in the Vintages section of your local LCBO and will be available for online ordering on Saturday, June 12. Pick up a bottle and head to their website to learn all about this great grape and region!
