Dear Subscriber

I was thrilled to read about Picasso's Jeune fille endormie which sold for over $20 million with the funds being donated to the University of Sydney to benefit scientific research. Another case of art having a positive impact on health! We do this on a much smaller, but no less important scale, by hosting monthly art workshops for the patients of Sydney Cancer Centre. We're also doing a short survey to find out why you do art and what the benefits are to you - we invite your insights (see below).

It was a fantastic atmosphere at our exhibition opening on Sunday afternoon with so many of you sharing your Art Est. world with family and friends. Have a look at Art Est. on Facebook and you can see all the photos from the day.

Welcome to Becky and Mary-Kate who are interning with us for six weeks as part of their study abroad program through Arcadia University.  Find out more about them in our 'Portrait of Two Interns' below.

There are some exciting new courses and workshops to explore at Art Est. in the coming months with full details now live on the website. See you in the holidays or back for Term 3!

Kind regards

Jennifer McNamara
Director

Why do we do art?

Is art your escape? Alternative therapy? Creativity unlocker? There are as many reasons why people turn to art as there are art genres. As part of her  university studies and internship at Art Est., Becky Moran has created a brief online questionnaire to give us some insights to your motivation for doing art. It's an anonymous survey and will only take 5 minutes of your time. We thank you for participating and will update you with the results next newsletter!

We invite you to take the survey here.

Artist News and Events

Sophie Gralton is over in Greece doing a printmaking workshop on Skopelos with Basil Hall - wouldn't we all like to be there with her?

Larissa Blake has enjoyed an amazing two weeks in New York exploring the NYC art scene.

Nicola Hill, in contrast to Larissa, is exploring the Australian outback and finding inspiration for her art in the Northern Territory.

Pina Bartolo is going to be drawing and painting in the medieval villages of Valletta, in Malta, and visiting the beautiful sculptures of Rome especially saying hello to Bernini's "Daphne and Apollo" and admiring the intense drama of the Caravaggios in the Villa Borghese......as well as eating the odd gelato, sitting by the Grand Harbour in Valletta and swimming in the aqua mediterranean waters. Sigh...

Todd Fuller  had his hand-drawn film selected in the CologneOFF video art in a global context nomadic festival project which will be touring Europe shortly; it includes screenings in Greece, Poland, Finland, Armenia, Russia, Estonia and Spain (and others). "Barry in the Wings" [detail from film still] pictured right.

Gabrielle Jones is  "Landscaping" Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick; 30 June to 9 September and moving to Blackheath 15 July. Look out for her Bali Art Retreats featured in upcoming Cosmo Health issue.

Portrait of Two Interns

Mary-Kate Heinemann (L) and Becky Moran (R) are interning with Art Est. as part of their university studies with Arcadia University for six weeks until 15 July, They are experiencing life at Art Est., from installing exhibitions, liaising with students to helping out with classes and general operations. Here's a quick insight:

Where are you from and what are you studying?

BM: I'm from Davidsonville Maryland, majoring in Communication Art at Virginia Commonwealth University, with a minor in Psychology, Certificate in Product Innovation.

M-K: I'm from Philadelphia and I go to York College of Pennsylvania where I study Marketing, focusing on Advertising with an International Business minor.

What inspired you to come to Sydney for your internship?

BM: Sydney, besides being English speaking, sounded exciting and like such a great opportunity for experience and adventure.

M-K: My dad was stationed here when he was in the US Navy, so I grew up hearing about Sydney and always wanted to visit.

What do you enjoy about being at Art Est.?

BM: I like that Art Est really has multiple factions of art all under one building. It has both adult and kids classes, studio spaces for artists, and a gallery.

M-K: I like meeting the variety of people who attend classes here, and the way creativity and individual expression are encouraged.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years time?

BM: I really don't know. I hope to be out of school and in a job pertaining to the arts, but the particulars are a bit foggy at the moment.

M-K: Working abroad  for an NGO or humanitarian organisation.

Who is your favourite artist or artwork and why?

BM: Right now, Alphonse Mucha. Besides liking his art style, I also have deep respect for him as a person who played a major role in Czechoslovakia, so much so that he was one of the first to be arrested when German troops invaded.

M-K: I just love all the art in the Art Est. Exhibition, because there is such a high standard and diversity in the works.
