No images? Click here ![]() Together With Good morning. I am admittedly not the most observant person in the world. More times than I can count, I've left an environment and had to be clued in on the underlying tone of the environment and what I missed. The eye rolls or the body language went right over my head.In leadership, I used to consider this a good thing. I would justify my ignorance by telling myself I was staying above the noise as a leader should. I now understand that there is infinite value in being a great observer. I wasn't staying above the noise; I was ignoring it.
Elevate your leadership Great leaders and managers are great listeners. We've all heard that "55% of communication is nonverbal." To be a great listener, you must be a great observer. In senior living and SNF operations, there are endless opportunities to observe. I've found the following to be some of the most important to keep a pulse on. The relationship between departments There is natural friction built into our business models that,t in some cases, was present long before we took over the leadership reigns. Nursing and dining pointing fingers at each other. Communication breakdowns between sales and maintenance regarding room/apartment turnovers and readiness. It's easy to overlook and even ignore these painpoints and potential bottlenecks to the culture and the operation. Instead, we should (with compassion and empathy) confront these issues head on. Get the department leaders in the same room and openly discuss challenges. Mood and energy levels at meetings Meeting's are productivity killers. Although some meetings are absolutely necessary and drive progress, others are not. Read the signals from the participants and if a meeting is dreaded by the attendees throw them the question- Is there a better and more productive way we can get this work done? If it's not your meeting, talk 1:1 with the meaning owner about your observations and encourage them to ask seek to understand how the meeting is providing value to others. What gives your team energy vs. what depletes their energy Equally as important to noticing the negative vibes is paying close attention to what makes people light up. Most people have something going on in their life that makes them happy or is important to them. How does their personal life relate to their work? Are you taking the time to learn and ask about those things to deepen your relationship? Are there ways you can leverage their talents and passions to improve their engagement?
As leaders we must always be observing, analyzing, and reacting. Assume positive intent in your approach and trust your instincts.
