Elevate your Leadership

How to deal with a difficult or downright negative intentioned co-worker:

Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Model

Background: The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Model is a vital framework for understanding different conflict-handling styles. It's particularly relevant in skilled nursing operations where diverse perspectives and stakes are involved.

Approach: This model outlines five strategies: Avoiding, Competing, Accommodating, Compromising, and Collaborating.

Application: Choose the strategy based on the importance of your goal and the relationship. For instance, Collaborating is ideal when both the goal and the relationship are important, fostering a win-win solution.

Insight: Promote collaboration whenever possible to solve problems creatively, enhancing team cohesion and patient care outcomes.

Accusation Audit by Chris Voss

Background: Developed by former FBI negotiator Chris Voss, the Accusation Audit is an innovative approach to confrontations. It's highly relevant in skilled nursing leadership, where clear communication is essential for effective team management and patient care.

Approach: Before confronting, list all possible accusations the other party might make against you.

Application: Address these accusations at the beginning of the conversation. This disarms potential criticisms and demonstrates empathy, which is crucial in a caregiving environment.

Insight: This technique will work magic in your confrontations and allow you to succeed at conflict resolution, ensuring a harmonious workplace.

TED Talk Insights by Adar Cohen

Approach 1: Move towards the conflict.

  • Application: Embrace the conflict as an opportunity. Use it to create an opening for dialogue.
  • Insight: Conflict is information and handled well; conflict is opportunity.

Approach 2: Pretend you know nothing.

  • Application: Ask open-ended questions to understand the other person's perspective. This approach encourages everyone to be heard.
  • Insight: Ask questions about people's experiences and listen to what they say.

Approach 3: Utilize silence.

  • Application: Be comfortable with silence. It can prompt deeper, more meaningful interactions.
  • Insight: Some of the best breakthroughs I've seen in tough conversations have emerged from a brief silence.

Implementing the Tactics

For skilled nursing leaders:

  1. Assess the Situation: Use the Thomas-Kilmann model to determine the appropriate strategy based on the goals and relationships involved.
  2. Prepare with an Accusation Audit: Reflect on potential criticisms and address them proactively in the conversation.
  3. Engage Actively: Embrace the conflict, ask open-ended questions, and don't rush to fill silence. These steps create an environment for open and effective dialogue.

Tie It All Together

When handled skillfully, confrontation can lead to constructive outcomes and stronger relationships. By integrating these advanced tactics, skilled nursing leaders can navigate confrontations more confidently and effectively, fostering a more cohesive and understanding work environment.

Remember, the key to successful confrontation lies in thoughtful preparation, empathetic engagement, and a strategic approach to conflict resolution. These tools improve workplace dynamics and positively impact patient care and team efficiency.
