This is Your Captain Speaking

Hi everyone and welcome to another issue of the Captain's newsletter. Well this is it, five weekends to go until season 2011 is done and dusted.  In that time we have 7 days worth of regattas, a curry night, the states after party, are hosting two regattas, the annual dinner and somewhere in there we are finalising plans for the summer season's programs. Oh and I suppose we should be doing some training too.

Below you'll find a series of reminders and summaries of what's to come over the next few weeks.  As it's unlikely I'll knock out another one of these newsletters before State Champs I'll also say good luck, row hard and do us proud!

Cheers,
Mike Jones
WARC Captain

Regatta Hosting

Westies is hosting two of the upcoming regattas, the masters regatta on Sunday September 4th, and then the big one, the first day of State Champs on Saturday September 17th.

We are still looking for volunteers for the following roles:
- Dinghy drivers (this one is important - if you can drive a dinghy or if you have a family member or friend who can, please get in touch with Emma at womensvc@warowingclub.org ASAP.)
- Medical officer (you don't need to be a doctor; if you have a senior first aid certificate we'd love to hear from you)
- Catering (whether you can bring a plate of your mum's famous cupcakes, or can man a BBQ for an hour or two, we need more volunteers!)

All Westies athletes are expected to help out on both days - even if you're not a masters age athlete we'll need you to help at the masters regatta too!  So think of it this way - if you volunteer to do something you get to choose your job rather than being allocated one.  Isn't that much nicer?

5 weeks to the finish line...

Saturday 27 August - Pennant Regatta - Leschenault Estuary, Bunbury
The last pennant regatta of the season is at Bunbury.  Most club members (and the trailers) will be heading down south on Friday night, and accommodation has already been booked. If you missed out on accommodation, get in touch with Peta at Peta.Rule@dpc.wa.gov.au right now.  You'll also need to tell your coaches well ahead of time if you are available for the regatta or not. On the Saturday night the club all gets together for a big dinner, so make sure you book in for that with Peta too.

Sunday 28 August - Head Race - Eaton River
The following morning sees us compete in the last head race of the season - a 6km (ish) jaunt down the Eaton River, about 10km north of Bunbury.  Again, let your coach know if you're available for this one.

Sunday 4 September - Masters Regatta - Champion Lakes - WARC HOSTING
The following weekend we have another half-day masters regatta for athletes who are 27 or over.  This time however, we are hosting the regatta.  This means we need to provide dinghy drivers, commentators, parking attendants, catering and a medical officer.  All club members (regardless of whether you're 27+ or not) are expected to attend and help out.  Friends, family and hangers-on who also want to volunteer their time are more than welcome!  Please email Emma at womensvc@warowingclub.org and let her know if you can volunteer your time and when you're available and what you can do.

Saturday 10 September - Sprint Regatta - Champion Lakes
The sprint regatta is like a normal pennant regatta (so it's open to all ages), except all races are only 500m.  A big turnout is expected and it's generally a pretty fun regatta, and a great opportunity to practise your race starts before the State Champs.  As before, please send your availabilities to your coaches well ahead of time. Given the races are very short, expect to be entered in more races than usual.  There is no boat unloading on this day, as we leave the boats at Champion Lakes in preparation for the following day...

Sunday 11 September - Masters State Championships - Champion Lakes
The first championships regatta is for masters athletes only, and is another Sunday morning half-day affair.  Expect a very early start since all the boats will be there already, and there will be a number of early heats (the first race will probably be at 7:30am).

Saturday 17 September - State Championships Day 1 - WARC HOSTING
This will be the biggest day of the year for the club.  We're expecting to have 50+ athletes competing on the day, as well as the hosting duties outlined before PLUS providing pontoon holders.  The catering activities will also be ramped up given there will be 3 times as many people there as there are at a normal pennant regatta.  All club members are expected to help out on the day.  We will also be heavily reliant on parents/friends/family given our athletes will be in and out of boats all day.  Please email Emma at womensvc@warowingclub.org to let her know what you can help out with.

Sunday 18 September - State Championships Day 2 and After Party
Finally, we have the last day of the season.  We're racing all day, then pack up and head back to the shed to unload boats before we have the club's winter season after party, starting at around 7:00pm (or whenever unloading is finished).  Parents, friends and family are more than welcome to attend - it'll be an extremely casual affair, and a BBQ will be provided.
