Good morning.  Do you believe in your ability to create luck?

I do.

The truth is, finding luck is not well, luck.  Creating luck and finding luck is a skill; just like any other skill, it can be learned and improved.

Think of luck like a rainstorm that comes to random locations, at random times, and with random intensity.

You can't control the rain or when and how long it lasts.

You can control whether you're standing in one spot hoping the rain will come or using natures clues and insights from others to try and find locations with the most rain.

Most importantly, you can control whether you're trying to collect that rain, when it does come, in a shot glass or an inflatable kiddie pool.

Your beliefs will tell you where you're on a fixed vs. growth mindset journey.

Elevate your leadership

I spend a lot of time managing up as I'm sure you do as well.  At work, and in life, I have a lot of people that demand, ask, or request things of me.

Keeping track of it all can be a challenge.

Helping others (the ones asking) keep track of what was asked, why it was asked, and in what context it was asked, can be a full-time job in itself.

Here are two steps I use to manage this aspect of my role. - Managing up.

1.) Weekly 1:1's

Hold a 1:1 every week at a consistent time and utilizing a consistent format.  This accomplishes a few things.

First, it sets the stage that there will be a weekly, in-person update and helps to alleviate some people's tendency to micro-manage or get in the way of progress by asking for updates when you're unprepared to provide them.

Second, it allows for course correction without too much time in between updates.  If you're going down the wrong path, it can be quickly corrected.

2.) Provide a 5-Bullet Status Update

People are busy and they often will forget what they asked you to do.  Don't be surprised by it, be prepared for it.

Provide an update by stating and asking these five questions during each 1:1.

  • What was I asked to do?
  • Why was I asked to do it?
  • What have I accomplished thus far?
  • What will I accomplish prior to our next 1:1?

I prefer to utilize four PowerPoint slides to provide my updates.  It's plain and simple and can be forwarded ahead of time.  Plus, I have learned over the years that people are more likely to open an attachment that is a PowerPoint over a word document.  There is something about a nice slide deck that catches people's attention.

About KamiCare by Kami Vision

Kami Vision is an AI services company focused on security solutions that increase businesses' and individuals' well-being, safety, and peace of mind. Its solution for healthcare and senior living organizations, KamiCare, is a fall detection and management solution that optimizes caregiving with automation and AI. KamiCare combines edge-based vision AI technology with human verifiers to identify and confirm falls with 99.9% accuracy. It is proven to decrease fall rates, time on the ground, and false alerts while identifying the root cause of falls. Plus, it reduces operational costs and improves resident occupancy and staff retention in senior living.

How it Works

Designed for senior living facilities, KamiCare accurately detects falls and instantly alerts caregivers. The artificial intelligence algorithms run directly on the KamiCare sensors. The sensors identify up to 30+ points on the body and detect body postures that indicate if a person falls. Sensors function in partial view and at night, using infrared technology to detect falls around the clock accurately.

Upon human confirmation, an alert is immediately sent to the designated caregiver(s) via phone call, SMS, or email for the appropriate course of action. Response escalation trees enable other caregivers to respond in case the first caregiver is unavailable. All of this happens within a maximum of 90 seconds to significantly shorten the typical fall response time. Future falls can be prevented based on analysis of the videos by the caregivers and fall specialists.
