Church Chuckles

The bride nearly fainted when Reverend Hal asked, “Do you, Robert, take Melinda to be your awful wedded wife?”

PowerChurch: Contributions

Your church:
• Receives donations for tithes and offerings
• Collects donations for a mission trip

  going on a mission trip
• Receives a check that includes the giver’s
tithe plus the fee for his teenager going to
Six Flags with the youth group
• Receives donations in the form of memorials
• Receives a love offering for your pastor
• Receives donated stock

Your church has had givers request the following be put on their contribution statement:
   • Supplies they purchased to fix up their Sunday School room
   • VBS supplies they purchased and are donating to the church
   • The value of time they invested on your church work day

Can all of the above items be included on the giver’s contribution statement?

Church Accountability: Housing Designation

Pastor Mike of New Hope Church had a verbal agreement with his church that a percentage of his salary would be designated as housing allowance. When Pastor Mike filed his taxes he always claimed the housing exclusion allowed for dual status ministers. Pastor Mike was audited and the internal revenue agent disallowed housing allowance for three years because there was no advance written designation.  Pastor Mike owed over $20,000 in taxes, penalty, and interest. The above situation could have been avoided with an advanced written housing designation.
