The organic wine movement is in full swing, benefitting the environment and wine drinkers alike. The next step, in a way, is vegan wine, but what makes a wine vegan? Most wines actually use animal products as a method of clarifying or fining. Egg whites are a common method, as is isinglass (a fish protein), and other animal proteins. Vegan-friendly wines, like Momo Sauvignon Blanc 2016, use substitutes like bentonite (volcanic clay) or activated charcoal to clarify their wines, keeping animals out of the process. Oh, Momo wines also happen to be organic, another plus for this week’s wine!
Tasting Note: Momo Sauvignon Blanc 2016 bursts out of the glass with tropical fruit and citrus, along with the herbaceous signature New Zealand puts on this grape. With a richer texture than you may expect, grapefruit and passionfruit layer over your taste buds and finish with refreshing acidity.
Enjoy With: Seafood (mussels anyone?), but it also happily pairs with goat’s cheese, chicken picatta, vegetable dishes and salads, or just a refreshing sip by itself.
Style: A dry, medium-bodied and crisp white wine.
Terroir / Region: Marlborough, New Zealand has climbed to fame over the last 30 years and Sauvignon Blanc has been its vehicle. It won the world over with its expression of super-clean, overtly fruity and easy to enjoy Sauvignon, creating a new style and making it one of the most prominent wines in the world. Cheers to that!
