Featured Recipe: Turkey Ranch Wrap

Turkey Ranch Wrap

Healthy and flavorful wraps make quick and easy after school snacks for kids of all ages. This one is healthy, tasty, and so simple to prepare you can have the kids help you make it. The included recipe for homemade "ranch" adds some health benefits to the standard recipe by replacing the buttermilk and sour cream with yogurt. You can even stretch this recipe one day further by saving some of the veggies and using the ranch as a dip for the next day’s after school snack.

Back-to-School Eats

Believe it or not, school is back in session! This means getting back into a school-year routine for meals and snacks. Having lunch makings and after school snacks on hand is important for your child’s brain power and growth. Here are a few tips for your back-to-school food shopping.

  • Go for grains: Choose whole grain breads, tortillas and crackers to boost fiber intake. Your child needs his or her age plus five for total daily fiber (ie: 7 year old + 5 = 12 grams of fiber daily)
  • Protein is a must: For lunches and snacks choose lean lunch meats such as roasted turkey or chicken, as well as tofu chunks, hard boiled eggs and string cheese. Peanut butter is another favorite on crackers or fruit slices.
  • Don’t forget the milk: Your children need three servings daily of milk, yogurt, kefir or dairy equivalent such as soymilk or calcium-fortified juices. Stock up on small cartons of milk (chocolate is OK!), yogurt, cottage cheese and flavored soymilk.
  • Fruits and veggies fill out the rest: Your kids need at least two pieces of fruit and two cups of veggies daily. Keep a container of pre-cut veggies in the fridge to pack in lunches and for after-school snacks. Small apples, oranges, red grapes and bananas make great additions to lunches, as well. Keep fruit in easy reach at home for after school time.
