Is your municipality “leading the pack” in green initiatives? Apply for UBCM Community Excellence Awards

Seize the opportunity to showcase your municipal or regional districts’ pioneering achievements in one of the qualifying categories, including leadership and innovation in green initiatives.  Application deadline is June 17, 2016 and the awards will be presented on Thursday, September 29th at the UBCM Convention during a special breakfast reception - open to applicants and winners only. This year is the inaugural year for the new agriculture award for local governments that support growing local.

UBCM releases preliminary program for the upcoming 2016 Convention

Stronger Together is the theme of this year’s UBCM Convention. The 2016 Convention will be held September 26-30 at the Victoria Conference Centre. If you have ideas to share, send in your session proposals by June 17th. For inspiration, take a look at the preliminary program, now available online.

CARIP Carbon Neutral Reporting Refresher Webinar Recording

Back-to-Basics Refresher on CARIP Carbon Neutral Reporting webinar reviewed frequently asked questions on filling out the CARIP survey and working toward reaching carbon neutrality. The webinar was presented by staff from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and the Climate Action Secretariat (CAS), Ministry of Environment. A recording of the webinar and associated power-point presentation are now available for viewing.

HEADS UP: for the municipal climate action enthusiasts

Implementing Community Sustainability Plans in BC research project focuses on the factors that support or hinder local governments’ ability to achieve successful implementation. The final report will be released in June 2016 and announced on the Toolkit’s news section.

National Industrial Symbiosis Project (NISP-Canada)— a proposed two-year pilot project that aims to bring together a number of local governments with local small to medium-sized businesses to utilize one company’s ‘waste as a resource’ for other companies.  A recent third-party audit in the UK’s NISP found a 40:1 benefit-to-cost ratio. The Community Energy Leadership Program (CELP) - Round 2 funding selections for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects have been made and will be announced shortly. The Round 3 call for applications is expected to launch by summer 2016. Stay tuned!
