A note from our Director The end of the year may be approaching, but this has not stopped the Latin America CAPE from continuing to launch transformative new initiatives to help New Zealanders engage and do business with Latin America. This update highlights three of these offerings: our first Latin America Market Awareness (LAMA) courses for SMEs; our inaugural ‘Globalistas in Action’ weekend for the Young Enterprise secondary school students we have taken to Latin America; and a new cross-CAPE website for teachers. In addition, we draw your attention to exciting Global Entrepreneurship and Market Perceptions Research events we are hosting next week. We also take this opportunity to welcome Mexico’s new Ambassador, His Excellency Alfredo Pérez Bravo, to New Zealand. We were delighted to introduce our CAPE to him earlier in the month. Lastly, we wish to express our solidarity with all the people of Chile as they respond to the challenges facing their society in the wake of the events of the last month. Matthew O'Meagher, Latin America CAPE Director We are delighted to have kicked off our Latin America Market Awareness (LAMA) Workshops in Hamilton and New Plymouth, in partnership with ExportNZ, NZTE, and Venture Taranaki. We invite you to the remaining 2019 course being held in Auckland next Tuesday, 19th November. These one-day interactive workshops target New Zealand business practitioners who would like to strengthen their existing Latin America capability, as well as those who have exported to other markets and now want to enter this region. There is no fee to participate in the workshops.
Market Insights Programme 2019 FinaleOur cross-CAPEs' 2019 Market Insights Programme (MIP) wrapped up in October with an exciting series of presentations from student interns on their MIP projects. Participating domestic and international students completed projects for Auckland, Waikato and Wellington businesses interested in, or already exporting to the Asia-Pacific region. Congratulations to our MIP 2019 Winners and their host businesses:
This year, our 2019 MIP students that focused on Latin America -- Callum Lunjevich, Victoria Beck, Eduardo Youkhana-Diaz and Victoria Freire shared some of their reflections and lessons from the programme. Students from all over the country that had participated in our LatAmBiz programmes came together again in Wellington. During the weekend they were tasked with creating some marketing strategies for SMEs looking at Latin America as a business option. The event featured the participation of the Embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, and the Consulate-General of Colombia, along with Callaghan Innovation, Tuia Group, Vaka Interactiv, Next Farm Ltd, Gamefroot, and Founder Spring. Our fantastic collaboration with YES started back in December 2017 with the first group to São Paulo, Brazil. Since then, 40 young entrepreneurs have travelled to Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina on these mobility programmes. Truly this is learning in action! Thank you to everyone involved in creating this fantastic event. LatAm Biz Entrepreneurship in Argentina and Chile 201916 New Zealand students recently went on our LatAm Biz Entrepreneurship programmes to Argentina and Chile in conjunction with YES. On these successful trips, students were able to interact and collaborate with Argentinian and Chilean students in a business environment. During the programme, students completed business challenges which involved preparing market entry strategies for potential companies wanting to do business in Argentina or Chile. 7 of our students also attended our GiA Weekend upon return from Argentina. All of the students talked about this being a life-changing experience for them. To read more about their trips click here: LatAmBiz Argentina and LatAmBiz Chile. 'Teaching for the Asia-Pacific' website launched The Teaching for the Asia-Pacific website was developed by the University of Waikato and supported by the three CAPEs. The website grows teachers’ understanding of the global competence they and their learners will need in order to interact with people from the Asia-Pacific and be good global citizens. It connects teachers to curated resources that support the integration of Asia-Pacific and Global Competence related learning into current and new curricula. New Zealand Latin AwardsCongratulations to our very own Lucy O'Neill, who has been nominated for two awards for the work that she does to promote Latin America in New Zealand. The New Zealand Latin Awards 2019 will be held in Christchurch on the 23rd November. The Latin Attitude category recognizes people from other nationalities (not from Latin America) who have an important presence in the development of Latin American culture. The Cultural promoter category is understood as a professional who chooses to promote, encourage, design, cultivate and/or promote Latin American culture in New Zealand. Good luck Lucy! EVENTSChile Perception Research - Breakfast EventThe Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence and New Zealand Story Group have commissioned another comprehensive Latin America country perception research study – this time the team went to Chile to understand the opportunities in the Chilean market. Please note, this research was conducted in August, prior to the current unrest in Chile. It is based on insights from interviews with businesses and consumers and their perceptions of Chile and New Zealand. We invite you to hear our findings and what opportunities there are in this gateway to Latin America. We also have speakers from MFAT, the Latin America CAPE, internationally renowned seed accelerator Start-Up Chile and a Nelson-based company doing business with Chile. Key findings of the perception research can be downloaded from the NZ Story Toolkit. Auckland Launch: Registrations close on Friday, 15 November.
