Neil MacGregor's announcement that he is leaving the British Museum after 13 years as Director has been making the arts pages headlines this week; the BFI has opened submissions for this year's London Film Festival (deadlines 12 / 19 June); touring exhibition New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio has embarked on its tour of East Asia and is still on show at the National Design Centre, Singapore; and applications are now open for next round of the Artists' International Development Fund (deadline 1 May).

 
 

London Book Fair 2015

Next week, the annual London Book Fair takes up its new residence at Olympia London (14-16 April). One of the world's largest and most important industry fairs, this year it will bring the best in contemporary Mexican writing and publishing to the UK, giving UK audiences a rare opportunity to meet and interact with renowned Mexican writers. Public event highlights include a Q&A with Mexican journalist and author Elena Poniatowska

Chris Thorpe on Confirmation

Writer, actor and theatre maker Chris Thorpe's one man show Confirmation has been making waves in the UK theatre community since it premiered in 2014. This challenging and timely piece brings audiences face to face with the views of political extremists and explores the phenomenon of confirmation bias. Lyn Gardner interviews Chris about the often extreme reactions the piece has provoked in audiences around the country.

The Selector

City of Music: Las Gidi Lagos

The Nigerian music scene has long been synonymous with Fela Kuti and Afrobeat, but on a recent research trip, the British Council music team went to the Nigerian capital Lagos to discover the music that Nigeria's youth are listening to right now, and the emerging artists starting to make an impact internationally. Their findings will feed into Remix, a project connecting Nigerian artists with British musicians.

Reinventing magical realism

Mexico is the country of focus at this year's London Book Fair, which hosts 11 Mexican authors over the three day fair next week. In a public Q&A event, novelists Juan Villoro and Jorge Volpi will discuss the reinvention of magical realism and its renewed relevance in contemporary Mexican literature. In this article, Arifa Akbar delves the rich history of exotic folklore, supernatural or baroque fantasy in Latin American literary tradition.

Young Fathers in South Africa

Moving Pictures on tour

As part of the British Council's Touring Exhibitions programme, Moving Pictures: Artists' Films from the Film London Jarman Award is currently touring 6 cities in China. The exhibition features works by prominent artists working in artists' film and moving image including Brad Butler and Karen Mirza, John Akomfrah, Rachel Maclean, Elizabeth Price and Turner Prize 2014 nominee James Richards.
