This Weekend's Pick

Wine of the Weekend

Older is often better, especially in the world of wine. There are really two ways to enjoy aged wines. One, you can buy bottles that need to be “laid down”, putting a corner of the closet or cellar to work for years, slowly building flavour in a top Bordeaux. Option number two is to buy your wines already aged to perfection, and one way to do that is to pick up a Spanish Rioja like the 2014 Burgo Viejo Crianza. In Rioja, the wineries do all the aging before the wine is released, so by the time you get your hands on a bottle, all you have to do is open and enjoy. Salut!

Tasting Notes: The 2014 Burgo Viejo Crianza is a classic Rioja blend of Tempranillo and Graciano with smooth tannins and a palate of cassis, red liquorice, vanilla and a lingering wisp of smoke.

Enjoy With: Red meats, cheese, or both! Charcuterie and cheese boards, or burgers with bacon and aged cheddar are ideal pairings.

Style: A smooth, medium-bodied red wine.

Terroir/Region: Rioja, Spain is considered to be one of the finest wine regions in the world, with a long history to support the claim. Winemaking dates back to the 11th century BC in the region with the arrival of the Ancient Romans who planted vines everywhere they went. Rioja has flourished and in 2018 had one of its biggest harvests in history with 468 million kilograms of grapes!

Producer: Burgo Viejo began when six farming families combined their efforts to achieve their dream of opening a winery. These families owned their own vineyards and were able to focus on growing the best grapes possible to create their wines. Today, bottles of Burgo Viejo can be found on dinner tables from Japan to Denmark and now yours!

Availability: The 2014 Burgo Viejo Crianza was released last weekend in the Vintages section of your local LCBO and is now available for online ordering. Grab one to drink tonight – no extra aging required!
