From initiatives like installing new lighting and sidewalks to increased security patrols and camera installations to landscaping and beautification efforts – Gateway85 has been going above and beyond. With less traffic on the roads as people have sheltered in place, projects have accelerated. In addition, beautification and landscaping efforts have increased during the spring in anticipation of the hotter summer months. As a result, the district is looking better than ever. Gateway85 will be doubling patrols for Memorial Day weekend. GATEWAY85 CID MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: With offices across the country, Vulcan Materials Company is the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates—primarily crushed stone, sand and gravel—and a major producer of aggregates-based construction materials including asphalt and ready-mixed concrete. Vulcan opened the Norcross Quarry in 1956 when the McDaniel family, who owned the farm where the quarry is now located, had a large area of exposed granite that attracted a Vulcan geologist. During that time, the area consisted mostly of farm houses and cattle, I-85 had not yet been developed and the closest paved road was Buford Highway. According to Carol Landrum, manager of government and community relations at Vulcan, the company had a tremendous vision to locate this quarry in the midst of what would become one of the most populated areas in Georgia. The Norcross Quarry is one of the busiest operations in Georgia, with shipments of over 3.6 million tons in 2019. The granite from the Norcross Quarry supplies a wide variety of crushed stone products for use in making concrete and asphalt as well as for all types of modern construction. The quarry’s product is used in roads, bridges, schools, libraries, hospitals, places of worship and other critical public infrastructure projects - not to mention commercial and residential construction. The average home in Gwinnett uses about 400 tons of crushed stone in its construction. Vulcan has benefited from Gwinnett County’s growth and Gateway85 CID’s efforts to make the district accessible, attractive and safe. Having easy access to major arteries like Beaver Ruin and Indian Trail Roads along with I-85 has made the transportation of its materials much easier. According to Landrum, where businesses are willing to invest, the community becomes stronger and can leverage additional resources that would be otherwise unavailable, resulting in a more livable community for all.
