Watercolour is spontaneous, versatile, and often has a mind of its own. It can be transparent and soft or opaque and bold—perfect characteristics for capturing the soul and individuality of people. Most of the subjects for this solo exhibition are family members, but some are strangers who have caught my eye. The selected images have a certain appeal to me: it might be a shared memory, an emotional expression, or a moment in time that captures my heart or interest. My enjoyment interacting with people is now extended through my paintings. I primarily paint with watercolours and enjoy experimenting with the broad scope of this medium. I have come to realize its compatibility with other mediums and alternate paper types. For example, some of the paintings in this exhibition use a layering of various mediums to create a more textured effect. A few are painted on Yupo, a synthetic paper with a glossy, water-resistant surface onto which the paint flows freely, giving way to the looser style that I seek in my work. Enrolling in the University of Alberta's Faculty of Extension Visual Arts Certificate program has provided me with a solid path to continue my journey with watercolour. It is with heartfelt thanks that I acknowledge the encouragement and support of my family, friends, and mentor. Student exhibitApril 3–19, 2017 Opening reception Friday, April 7, Location Autobiography My interest in art began later in life, at my friend’s kitchen table. She was taking watercolour lessons and wanted to share her enthusiasm for the medium. That short lesson was all it took, and I enrolled in community college art, drawing, and watercolour classes. I enjoyed drawing, and my passion grew even more when colour was added. My desire to continue to learn led me to enrol in the University of Alberta's Faculty of Extension, Visual Arts Certificate program. After taking portrait drawing and watercolour classes, I knew what subjects inspired me to paint. While taking classes and preparing for my solo exhibition, I have come to appreciate the works of Degas, Caravaggio, Andrew Wyeth, and the contemporary works of Jean Pederson, Bev Jozwiak, and Charles Reid. This solo exhibition marks the continuation of my journey as a watercolour artist. I am looking forward to where it is going to take me.
