We hear the question, “Should I be in social media?” again and again. So many business people—with not much time left in their day—are wondering if they should be marketing in social media. It’s free! Will it make a difference?

Short answer: It’s not THE answer.
Longer answer: Depending on your audience (think people first) and your business, it might be a good fit. But social is an add-on, not instead of.

Marketing—and your audiences—have changed. A lot.
There have been massive changes in communication channels, audience expectations and media options in the last few years. So many tactics that used to work don’t work anymore.

Yet despite the hype about social media, not everyone is on Facebook every day. Many business owners and managers over 55 don’t use either Twitter or Facebook. Google+ is still struggling to get broad engagement. And Pinterest is 80% women.

Our advice:
    1. Take a look at your website first. That’s where more people will end up, social or not. Is your message clear? Do people understand what you offer (at a glance!) and why they should choose you?
    2. Then profile your target audiences. Who are they? Where are they? How do they communicate? If your target isn’t a social user, don’t bother with social.
    3. If you’re going to choose a social network or two, match it to your audiences.
    4. Then don’t dabble, post frequently. Respond. Share. Use photos and visuals. It takes time and commitment.
    5. Think help and share before you sell. Tell a story with pictures, share an insight, offer links or examples that would be useful to your audience. Have some fun. Be real and friendly.

Bottom line, effective marketing makes it easy for people to know who you are, what you do and why they should care. Focus on “what’s in it for me?” from their (not your) point of view.
