GPs working at WA public hospitals are not remunerated as specialists, despite the fact they hold a specialist qualification acknowledged by the Australian Medical Council. Even after much negotiation, WA Health has not budged on this issue.
The AMA (WA) recently started proceedings in the Industrial Magistrates Court against WA Health over its failure to pay GPs as specialists. The AMA (WA) is seeking backpay, and prejudgement interest for the affected doctors, together with penalties against the employers. These doctors should be paid in accordance with the WA Health System – Medical Practitioners – AMA Industrial Agreement 2016. The AMA (WA) is committed to General Practice being recognised as a specialty.
