Wine of the Weekend

Caliterra Sauvignon Blanc 2018

This is the time of year when the wine world looks back at 2018 and of course, tries to look forward to guess what you, the wine buyer, will want this coming year. Some say Cabernet Franc will be the next craze.  Others look to organic and vegan wine being an even higher priority with consumers now being more conscious of what they drink than ever before. Wines you’ve never heard of may also be a big deal; random little gems from Italy, South America and Eastern Europe might be taking the wine world by storm. The one thing that will always be in favour is a good deal.  It never goes out of fashion and Caliterra Sauvignon Blanc is a really good deal, especially at $1.00 off!

Tasting Notes: 100% Sauvignon Blanc, Caliterra has honed-in on the bright, fruity and aromatic style that brought so much attention to the grape. Citrus, gooseberry and fresh grass leap out of the glass, with melon, passionfruit and mango following on the palate. Vibrant mineral notes and light, lively acidity round out the harmonized flavours.

Enjoy With: Green salads, seafoods like sushi and ceviche, goat’s cheese, veggie dishes or roast poultry with herbs. If you’re a New Zealand Sauv Blanc fan, Chile is a great place to explore while sticking to the expressive, aromatic style.

Style: A dry, medium-bodied white wine.

Terroir/Region: The Casablanca Valley of Chile is ideal for Sauvignon Blanc. Lying close to the Pacific Ocean, the region receives cool breezes which are a result of the Humbolt current moving along the coast of South America, creating fresh and vibrant wines as a result. It is a young region and was used for grazing livestock until the 1980s. Now it is one of the premier regions in South America with a reputation for quality and value, and the potential to make some of the world’s great wines.

Producer: Caliterra was founded in 1996 as a partnership between the Mondavi family of California (yes, that Mondavi family) and the iconic Errazuriz family of Chile, with the goal of expressing the potential quality of Chilean wine. The Errazuriz family eventually took over the winery and became fully engaged with the regions and people involved. By implementing social and environmental initiatives on their lands and those around their vineyards, they have truly made a wine that is sustainably sourced, for the sake of their communities as well as their land.
