Lounge

The atrium at California's Berkeley Art Museum now offers new lounge seating for visitors. Whether you’re relaxing or watching live performances, the benches are sure to please. Their organic shapes are made from a rigid foam substrate laminated to layers of painted plywood. Be careful if you visit – with wireless Internet and built-in power outlets, you may never leave this orange oasis.

Quadrangle
Notebook

This is a big year for Quadrangle. Not only are some of its most visible projects finishing and therefore opening to the public, it also just announced an exciting partnership with BDP from London. So it was only fitting that this year's notebook gift would be the most surprising and intricate the firm had ever produced. With a custom embossed and foil stamped cover, the notebook opens with a wash of fluorescent ink covering the end papers. Inside, a set of designed sticker tabs are iconic and fun, reflecting the culture of Quadrangle’s studio.

Stone Jar Strategic Communication
Branding

We were thrilled when long-time client and friend of H&W, Gayla Brock-Woodland, asked if we would create a brand for her own company, Stone Jar Strategic Communications.  The company’s philosophy is summed up in its name – the fitting of small and large stones into a jar. “If you start with the big stones, then the small ones slide naturally into the spaces around them.  It’s a lesson about prioritizing the things that are critical to your success instead of getting distracted by a whole lot of small and sometimes easier tasks.” The visual identity plays with the counter from the letter “o” making it both a stone and the opening of a jar. Bold colours and a typeface with some clever twists give the identity a personality befitting Gayla’s approach to work. We wish her all the best with her new venture.

Renaissance
Editorial Design

Renaissance is the quarterly publication from The Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO). The magazine caters to the retired education community on topics ranging from health to travel and lifestyle. H&W commissioned artist Jenn Liv to illustrate an article on “happiness” – what that means, how it is measured and why it matters. Between the years 2015-2017, Canada ranked as the seventh happiest country in the world. The report concluded that "People who are happier achieve better life outcomes, including financial success, supportive relationships, mental health, effective coping, and even physical health and longevity."
