Happy Canada Day – let us explain! Canada Day is next Wednesday, which means that this is the last Wine of the Weekend before then and our chance to wish you the best for our national holiday. A mid-week Canada Day is always a bit weird, but it also means that it doesn’t get rolled into a long weekend with plans to travel, host a big gathering, or the rush to shop. A more relaxed Canada Day is (hopefully) in store, and if Mother Nature cooperates, we’ll have a clear sky for fireworks. It’s a great time for opening something Canadian, and Strewn Barrel Aged Chardonnay is perfect for the occasion.
Tasting Notes: Strewn Barrel Aged Chardonnay shows ripe apple, pear and tropical fruit along with buttery notes and toasty oak from the 8 months spent in American, French and Canadian barrels.
Enjoy With: Seafood like shrimp cocktail or grilled salmon, barbeque chicken, veggies and dip or other appetizers. Creamy cheeses like brie or camembert are also a great pairing.
Style: A bone-dry, rich, full-bodied white wine.
Terroir/Region: With Lake Ontario moderating the climate and making viticulture possible, the Niagara Peninsula has become the most planted wine region in Canada. Centuries of glacial activity have left diverse soil deposits throughout the region resulting in subtle, yet complex, differences in the vines grown there. Combined with the Niagara Escarpment’s effect on local winds and climate, the wines of Niagara can change in character from one plot to the next, or even one vine row to the next!
Producer: The site of the Strewn winery has been a community hub for over 70 years, going back to when the buildings housed a cannery for Niagara fruit growers. As eating habits changed, the cannery closed, and in 1997, vines were planted and the Strewn winery was founded. Although the buildings are still used to process Niagara fruit (just grapes now), they have been renovated extensively to house the winery, restaurant and cooking school that make up Strewn and keep the site a local stomping ground.
